Questions and Answers

Yeah, that's a step back for sure. Or at least open up the trade window when I double click their portrait in the inventory, the same way it does for transfering goods between ships. Bah. Oh well, can't have everything, I suppose...
And speaking of steps back, am I the only one who absolutely hates the huge signs on buildings? I distinctly remember that POTC had discrete little signs that fit perfectly into the mood of the game and were even in the correct language. Now I come into a French town and I'm greeted by a bloody humongous billboard reading "STORE". Bleh. Totally destroys the atmosphere and immersion. Made even worse by the fact that these are obviously an afterthought pasted on at the last minute, since some buildings still retain the small sign in addition to the big one. I don't suppose there's a mod to remove those, is there?

You could try to remove them using Ines Dias' TOOL. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
Of course all the towns are cobbled together from the same models anyway. The layout might change, but the actual buildings remain the same.
Not so in PotC, where each town looks distinctly different.

Yeah, that's another thing, but one step at a time, eh? Let's start with the signs. Unfortunately I'm a total n00b when it comes to modding. I'll try.

Is it just me, or the enemy soldiers are like ubersoldiers, genetically engeeniered to overcome your boarding party no matter what? Even heavily using grapeshots, i end up losing at least half of my people on a fight with a ship which has the same class as me.

Not really, no. Your guys probably have very low soldiering skill, I've found that to be extremely important. It's also a good idea to hire at least a pair of fighters and equip them with plenty of healing potions.

Speaking of officers, I could <i>really</i> use an answer to my earlier question about Blood's buddies. Is it possible to get them all to join? I'm starting over because I <strike>messed up</strike> got screwed over and again two of the dudes don't feel like coming along.

Edit: Nevermind. It occurred to me to look through the dialog files and it seems there is no other way for the conversation to play out. Oh well.

So you can't convince the other two officers to join. Than why the hell did you saved them? Because Blood had that incredible big heart?<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

Well no, because he needs them to help him sail the ship. He says as much to them and they agree. And when you finally have the ship they turn tail and run. "Hey, buddy. Thanks for freeing me from slavery and taking care of my problems. Well, see ya." Bloody traitors... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />
But hey, what do I know, maybe that's the way it happens in the book.
Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I don't know if you guys know this but Peter's character is modelled on <a href="http://anry.deviantart.com/art/Piter-Blood-5522600" target="_blank">this</a> painting. Some of this guy's art cropped up in AOP too. Too bad COAS doesn't have his work. IMO good artwork does much to improve the atmosphere of a game.

For people who are tired of having a low sailing skill or want to raise it quickly AND legitimately:

Attack a fort.

Seriously, I attacked a Spanish fort out of sheer frustration at not being able to land at a beach by Curacao and in 8 minutes of strafing runs gained 40 navigation skill. This is probably because of the sheer number of cannon balls I was dodging, so make sure you save after every successful strafe, and any damage is worth it. This also massively raises your cannoneer and accuracy skills if you use exploding shot on the cannons and take out a dozen or so (the fort I attacked had 165 cannons). When making a forward assault with your ship, weave back and forth (it helps to have the acceleration and sailing perks) and then make a sharp turn in front of the fort with the wind and do a quick strafe right across. If your ship has good maneuverability and speed this will be absolutely no problem. I boarded the Blue Bird and claimed it and then upgraded maneuverability and speed at Bermuda, giving me a top sail of around 70. I don't recommend trying this with a ship that's got no hull strength, but if you're a good sailor you can avoid every single cannon (I have), and each avoid helps boost sailing. Again, I was just doing this out of frustration and only discovered after about 6 minutes that my sailing skill had gone from 40 to 75, which allowed me to fire my navigator and take over since my skill was now 95 with an idol I found. It works a treat if you hate excess crew and want to pilot your own ship, so go for it.

One thing that I should warn about if you use the upgrade ship thing in Bermuda is the cannon upgrade so far has NOT worked for me. I tried upgrading my xebec to 32 pound culverins and it said upgraded after I paid 80 k and a load of mahogany but I'm still stuck with 24 pound culverins, so be very careful with it. The other upgrades all work, though.

It works o.k. with your "sailing skill" but if you don't have any officer assigned as navigator then your "navigational ship perks" won't get activated so better keep your navigator in his place.

By multitasking your officers you can reduce their number.

EDIT: I made a CORRECTION for this post. You can see it among the posts below.

Does anybody know how "old sea dog" perk work????
In the description said that you can avoid ordinary encounters or something like that and that navigator have to have this perk.
My navigator have the perk but as usual every damn ship in caribbean is chasing me and I can't avoid the battle.
I need just one more perk to choose it myself but I'm lvl 40 and leveling is now very rare so I don't know if it's buged or I have to get this perk.

It doesn't see to work. I assume regular encounter means the ships that are always attacking me and that still happens.

The way the Old Sea Dog perk works is that most times, even if you let a ship catch you, you will still get the Sail Away option that you can choose. It won't always work, but once you have the perk you should be able to just sail away more often than not.

CORRECTION: Even if you don't have any officers assigned, your "ship perks" are still active.
I fired both my navigator and carpenter, and assigned no officer to their positions, my navigational and carpentry ship perks were still active.
So if you have all the ship perks, you don't need any officer assigned to get your ship perks activated.

FYI, all four officers have joined Blood in the book. My guess is, Akella didn't want to give players even bigger advantage <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

BTW, "Captain Blood" is available for free on the Project Gutenberg page, if you're interested <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

There are two full sets of the skulls in COAS.
