Rewrite current main quest...

PLEASE NOTE: I mean no offense by any of the below. If you are offended by anything, I am terribly sorry indeed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Your ideas do pose a bunch of questions:
- Why does Jack want to find Davy Jones? His ship hasn't been sunk by Lord Cutlet Beckett yet. He doesn't even HAVE his ship yet. What I understood from the movies is that Cutler Beckett asked Jack to do something he didn't want to. Transport slaves from Africa to the Caribbean, if I am correct. This is not mentioned in the film, but IS found somewhere on the DMC website in a game or something. In any case: Jack doesn't want to and Beckett burns his ship, the <i>Wicked Wench</i>. Jack then makes his deal with Davy to raise the ship from the bottom of the sea.
- What does Beckett want with Will Turner? We are currently over ten years before the events of CotBP, so Will is only a little kid, perhaps even still a baby. If we try to remain more-or-less true to the films' timeline, that is. We can, of course, decide to forget about the film's timeline and just make up a new story with the same characters.
- Why is Tia Dalma living so near to a pirate village? In DMC she was living far in the jungles.

I do not want to critize your work or anything, but it seems to me that what you're suggesting is adding a new film quest, intertwined with the current main quest instead of rewriting the current main quest as was my original idea. You ideas are definitly not bad ideas at all, they are just not what I personally had in mind. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops3.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops2" border="0" alt="oops3.gif" />

This is the film's backstory as I understand it:

Jack Sparrow is a captain in the employ of Cutler Beckett's East India Trading Company (note: Beckett is NOT a Lord yet). At one point in time, Beckett asks Jack to transport slaves from Africa to the Caribbean. Jack refuses. Perhaps Jack did sail to Africa, but instead of delivering the slaves to Beckett, he freed them. I personally like to think Tia Dalma was either amongst these slaves or at least had some part in this or knew about it. This is because of the number of African people who are always seen around Tia Dalma's swamp hut. In any case: Cutler Beckett was not pleased and he branded Jack a pirate and burned his ship, the <i>Wicked Wench</i>. Jack then makes his deal with Davy Jones to raise his ship from the depths. Davy does this in return for Jack's promise that he will join Davy's crew after 13 years of captaining his newly renamed <i>Black Pearl</i>. At some point in time, Jack "barters" his compass from Tia Dalma. If my above assumption is correct, Tia might have given the compass to Jack in thanks of his help with freeing the slaves. Jack goes to Tortuga and hires a crew, including First Mate Barbossa. Together they go to Isla de Muerte, but Jack is mutinied upon. The Pearl's new crew is cursed and after a while they start searching for the gold coins they spent. During this search, they encounter the <i>HMS Dauntless</i> with onboard the young Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, along with Governor Weatherby Swann of Port Royal, Lieutenant James Norrington and Mr. Gibbs who is still in the employ of the Royal Navy. Somewhere during the ten years between these events and the setting of the first film (NOT counting the opening prologue), Mr. Gibbs leaves the Royal Navy and gets to know Jack. After this, the events of the films take place, so I don't need to describe these anymore.

If possible, I would like our quest rewrite to be as true as possible to this. So basically we would need to come up with a story that includes all of the above events, but also all events, or at least similar events, to the ones in our current main quest. Preferrably even in the same order. And if possible I would like to change some of the current main quest events into the events of the films' backstory. An example would be replacing the Douwesen storm sequence with Jack losing his ship. Reason: The player loses his ship here, is washed ashore and meets with a more-or-less random character there. The player gets his ship back again later. Now if we make it so that the player loses his ship because of Beckett sinking her (instead of the storm), then meeting Davy Jones ashore, that is basically the same event, but now according to the film's backstory instead. When the player then gets to Isla Muelle, it will not be his original ship there anymore, but the Black Pearl instead.

If we manage to do this properly, we can show how Jack became a pirate and which events led up to the films without actually doing all that much coding work.

No Offense taken - and none meant by my reply - I agree that this does not follow the film(s) story line but I thought the intention was to "get more piratey", not force a linear story plus add an alternative story line and to minimize re-programing.
It is not a problem for me to write it however you require.
I do think we are seeing the early days differently, as to whether they should be "in game" or not, or if in part, to what extent. We just need to agree where to start.
My main concern is the ability for training for new players. It is easy for those those of us who have played for a while to forget how hard the game was at first.
To goto film pre-story:
Basically, I believe in the game if you wish to add pre-film material, could start with Jack trying to steal the ship at Port Royal and being arrested.
The problem I saw with this is, that for new players (as is) we start in a cabin and on deck to get some "training"
As I see the "film" he is already trained but no ship - I might be being picky here, but I hope you see my point. I think the tutorial is required to stay, however, the training could be on land just prior to his being captured.

Alternatively It could start with Jack recruiting his crew (Tortuga) - close to the current Oxbay start - this maintains the tutorial. But would require new characters (Elizabeth & Will) taking up officer slots prior to the character gaining much experience. That is, restricting the players ability to recruit officers to maximize his "stats" when they are already at a low level.

I may be over worrying here - So let me have your thoughts on where would you like to start the game in the total story line and let me see what I can do in the next day or two.

NOTE: Haven't read your above post yet. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The below are my attempts at doing something. It is far from being perfect and it needs a lot of gaps to be filled and questions to be answered. I hope somebody else can make a more thorough screenplay though.

Start new game
Player can choose starting location, character name, model, starting ship, etc. Just like it is now
If starting location is "tutorial deck", the tutorial will start, including the option to perform a stormy start

TUTORIAL:

In cabin for tutorial

Player came from Europe to the Caribbean as a midshipman aboard Malcolm's ship. Malcolm has taken a liking to the player during the voyage and has taught him a bit about sailing. There was a storm the night before arriving at the island that has killed many of the ship's crew, including the highest-ranking officers. Malcolm gives the ship to the player and retires at the island.

The player is not superstituous at all and doesn't believe in the supernatural, even though Malcolm does tell him about it. During the game, the player gains more and more knowledge about Davy Jones, the Kraken and the treasure of Isla de Muerte.

MAIN QUEST:
-----------
Triggered as soon as you leave Oxbay port for the first time

Oxbay taken by the French
Sail to Redmond to inform Governor <i>Weatherby Swann</i> of invasion
The governor doesn't really believe it and doesn't want to do anything about it, except to send the player to gather more information.

Sail to Oxbay (Greenford or Beach)
Go to Oxbay Tavern for info on French
Landlord tells about French officer
Talk to French Officer
Find out about ammunition for French at Falaise de Fleur

At Falaise de Fleur several hidden clues are given to the player that the French governor was not the person who ordered the attack on Oxbay
Sink/Capture the ammunition ship
Report to Swann

Escort Ships to Greenford
Meet agent Tobias at Oxbay Tavern
Hide in Shipyard
Get Davy Jones' Music Box [Chest with cursed coins must be replaced. After all: The curse hasn't happened yet.]
Shipyard owner tells player that Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company wants this object

Escape from Oxbay
Report to Swann at Redmond
Swann is pleased to hear of this, but shows no sign of any plans to retake Oxbay
Quest for governor Swann ends here

Player can now go to see Cutler Beckett, who can be found in the East India Trading Company Headquarters, situated at one of the English islands (not nescessarily Redmond) - <b>Location must still be added</b>

Before entering the building, the player is stopped by two strange men who want the object given to the player by the Oxbay shipyard owner
These men look reasonably normal, but slightly oddish. They are crewmembers of Davy Jones who have recently been hired, so they don't look so cursed that most people would notice. But the player finds it odd.
The cursed pirates can be killed, but if one is killed, the other is resurrected, so you keep going and going. Eventually the player gives the locket to the pirates and they leave.

Player goes into the building and talks to Beckett for the first time. The player tells Beckett a bit about the strange story, but Beckett seems uninterested and sends the player away.

Go inside tavern and meet Danielle [Annamaria?]
Fight soldiers
Get arrested
Get released by Cutler Beckett
Beckett tells the player of the liberation of Oxbay
Quest find Rheims for Beckett
Sail to pirate island (QC or Tortuga)

Go to pirate town to look for Reihms
Find out Reihms has gone to Isla Muelle
Sail to Isla Muelle
Go to Tavern
Get taken to Smuggler Leader
Break into Reihms' house

Sail to Oxbay
Go to shipyard
Owner gives a clue about the Flying Dutchman

Sail to Falaise de Fleur – see Flying Dutchman
Go to house to meet a horribly cursed-looking old man, who will tell you the story of the Flying Dutchman's curse

Plot points that could be included:
- Oxbay liberation never actually took place! The whole invasion was set up by Beckett in his quest to control the Caribbean [as the player will find out at the end]

Beckett gives player command of the "Wicked Wench" when the player returns the statue collection to him
After this, player is ordered to sail all the way to Africa to transport slaves to the Caribbean
[Voyage is not actually performed in the game. Just a teleport to a beach that is supposed to be Africa. Perhaps show a movie of a ship sailing there.]

Player won't give the money to the slave owners and the slave owners try to kill the player. Player kills slave owners and sets free the slaves. Tia Dalma is amongst them and seems to give some supernatural support to the player*. Some of them, including Tia, go with the player to the Caribbean after all, but as passengers instead of slaves.
* Player notes this in the questbook and considers it odd

Back in the Caribbean, the player goes to Beckett again, telling him that he failed. Beckett doesn't seem very angry and lets the player go. When the player gets back to port, he sees his ship burning and sinking. He is then met by Mercer who knocks him out. When the player regains consciousness, he sees a "P" on his arm: He has been marked a pirate. The player also finds himself at an unknown beach [Douwesen]. Player is really angry and sad about what Beckett did to his ship, which he had come to love during the long voyage to Africa. Then Davy Jones walks out of the sea, telling him there might be a way to get his ship back. Player accepts. Davy tells player that his ship will be waiting for him at Isla Muelle. Player must then find a way to get there, like in original quest.

Upon arrival at Khael Roa, there are no others ships. Player gets the item from the temple. He then encounters Mercer at the beach, who was sent by Beckett. Player doesn't want to give the item and chases Mercer away. When going to sea, player is met with a big Manowar, captained by Beckett.

Player goes back to Oxbay to return the researcher to his lighthouse. Here the player is again attacked by the English and Beckett is released. Player finds out that the English soldiers are loyal to Beckett and not to the governor. Reason: Oxbay liberation never actually took place! The whole invasion was set up by Beckett in his quest to control the Caribbean and he managed to take Oxbay.

Player goes to tell this to Swann, but finds he is removed from his governor position and sent to England to stand trial. Beckett managed to put all the blame on Weatherby Swann. Swann is replaced by John Clifford Brin. Player explains to Brin. Brin is relieved that his friend Weatherby Swann is not corrupt after all and sends an envoy back to England immediately.

The player, now in charge of the Black Pearl, can then do whatever he likes, such as:
- Visit Tia Dalma and get the compass
- Go to Tortuga and hire crew with Barbossa
- Find out the legend of the Isla de Muerte treasure
- Try to find the treasure, but get mutinied upon

After the mutiny, the player will be left alone on an island and will need to find out how to get off again. Weatherby Swann again replaces Brin as governor, taking with him Elizabeth and Will. Mr. Gibbs leaves the Royal Navy and can be encountered by the player somewhere, somehow.

During the next couple of years, Beckett keeps getting more powerful in the Caribbean. Once Will has grown up, player can use him to lift the curse and retake the Pearl.

QUESTION: What should be in at Khael Roa and what use should it have?
Perhaps a magical sword useful for fighting against immortal enemies? There is a magical sword in the SLiB mod files that we could hyjack.

RANDOM THOUGHT: How about random Kraken attacks? Some times ships are sunk immediately at random with a lot of splashing seen around it.

The below are my ideas. Feel free to agree/disagree with everything. It is far from being perfect and it needs a lot of gaps to be filled and questions to be answered. I hope somebody else can make a more thorough screenplay though.

O.K. - Got it - We agree on start.
Lets see how that goes when laid out. - I will highlight what I see as needed additions/problems
Back later

i certainly agree with pieter. maybe the the excisting main quest should be adjusted first, and then add the bits after it. about the mutiny: maybe this should be an evil stormy start, but then without a ship? it would certainly save a large amount of programming. the quest to get his ship back would start after he would have talked to a certain person on an island. it's not exactly nessesary to prevent the player from ending up on the same island from which he continues the quest. it would certainly make it a lot easier for the player. it would simply be a small chance of getting lucky.

about the khael roa item: a sword to fight undead would be handy, but not quite nessesary at that point. besides, it might lead the player to think that he has to fight them later in the game. i'm not saying that it's a bad idea though. maybe the player should be informed what it does later on it the game, or maybe tia dalma should imbue it. the problem with that is that it might just as well be any other sword that would be imbued. maybe it simply should be treasure? but only a certain valuable gem, as the rest would of course be lost. (indiana jones anyone?) maybe a really big and valuable ruby, or it should be a then unique blue crystal main skull for sacred ritual. those things bring in quite a lot.

This is first page of outline re-write which I think follows your ideas more closely.
If we can agree I will continue.

Oh yes! - Shots have been fired, blood has been spilt and in those days that was the "act of war" (remember Jenkin's ear). As you read through, Oxbay MAY not get liberated - the plot thickens, Ooh arr!

This sounds pretty darn good. I only have one question and one comment:
Question: Why would the French help the English fight the pirates that would have captured Oxbay? Or is this the reason for the war between the two countries and they were friendly before? Now that would be a brilliant plot of Beckett's: Cause a war between France and England and gain power through it himself. Sounds like Star Wars to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Comment: I think Jack's father is named Teague Sparrow in the final film. Grant was just a rumour. But we will only know this for sure when it's officially confirmed somewhere.

Other than this: Excellent work as far as I'm concerned! Looking forward to the next part! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

French helped English as both far from home (Europe) and it would have been a case of "needs must" (survival in local conditions - hurricane, drought etc.) as there would have been little help anywhere else locally (if in fact the pirates had attacked as the pirates were a greater scourge than each would have been to each other ) - and yes it MAY have been Becketts idea.

Quote " according to the official Disney website and the game based on the film series, Jack Sparrow, the son of Captain Grant Sparrow, was born in East Colonial India ... worked for the East India Trading Company .. working for Cutler Beckett" I don't mind what his name is - this is where I got Grant from.

I will work on the next bit.

Historically the nations in the Caribbean were very much at war with each other, I think. But your suggestion gives me an interesting idea: At the start of the game, all nations are friendly with each other. The result is that the player only has to worry about the pirates. As the game progresses, nation's relations change, wars are started, pacts are made, either by the influence of the player or not. So as the game progresses, the player would get the added challenge of nations becoming hostile. That way the game would become harder as the game progresses instead of easier. Just a random thought. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

The first time I saw the name "Grant Sparrow" was in a fake trailer description many months ago. It was Captain Grant "Sea Sponge" Sparrow in that description. I then heard Teague as being apparently the official name for Jack's father. But I am not really sure what his real name will be in the final film. We'll just have to wait until some official source confirms which of the two it is. Personally I actually like Grant better than Teague though. Teague is a weeeiiird name. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="wacko.gif" />

well, i have seen pirate games where the relations would constantly fulctuate between the nations. but i can see a problem where it might happen that the player's efforts might be in vain as his relations with a natio would be affected too. also, a new player, who has just learned how the flags work, will not really understand what's going on when he's suddenly hostile with a nation because he's flying the wron gflag, which was previously the right one.

what would happen is this:

maybe the player has a LOM with spain, and flies the english flag to prevent other nations from attacking him as well. when spain gets hsotile with england, and the player doesn't know this, he will likely loose his LOM with spain.

Any objection to changing Danielle to Elizabeth Swann?

(In our story her father is leaving for England (we think) so she is a "free agent" for the moment. She would be generally following the existing Danielle quest till it's completed, then ...)

I need your comments to be able to continue.
Thanks

I object (sorry) She is still a kid then, so I think that isn`t a good idea. I think tia dalma or anamaria is a better idea.

Question: do you intend to use my <i>Black Pearl</i>? I'm asking because I can easily make <i>Wood color Pearl</i> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

No problem with Anamaria - dressed as a man?
I think it is still too early for Tia Dalma - Jack needs to go to Africa first after meeting Beckett

Any other votes?

If we rewrite the mainquest, we need to do it right.
So I continued with skinning for POTC. First a character:

Jack Sparrow DMC style:
<img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/Thomas_the_Terror/POTC%20special%20Characters/DMCJackSparrow.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

But we need also some special location. So here is one:

Cabin of the Black Pearl:
<img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/Thomas_the_Terror/POTC%20special%20Characters/BlackPearlCabinWindow.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
<img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/Thomas_the_Terror/POTC%20special%20Characters/BlackPearlCabinDoor.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
<img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/Thomas_the_Terror/POTC%20special%20Characters/BlackPearlCabinCloset.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

I am also almost done with the deck of the Black Pearl!

is jack really that different in DMC? i vote for annamaria too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> and indeed dressed as a man.

@Kazeite, ofcourse YOUR Pearl, it is PERFECT!
@Short Jack Gold, not as a man, but you are right Anamaria is a better choice!

@Morgan

Yes he is, the depp model we use now isn`t right for the first one either, Jack never weared black, always dark blue vest and gray/brown trousers, and light coloured boots!
