Rewrite current main quest...

Um... no it's not. The ship we see in the beginning of TCotPB is the one and only <i>HMS Dauntless</i>.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I've taken the liberty of making it a different ship for my book. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> Sorry I forgot to say that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I love the idea of adding the Jack Sparrow story to the game. Some of the ideas in this thread are great, but some of the time lines don't match up. Sparrow worked for the East India Company commanding the Wicked Wench, Becket sends him to pick-up a special cargo in which turns out to be slaves. Sparrow releases them. Becket arrests Jack brands him as a pirate and burns his ship. Jack escapes before he is hung and tries to raise the Wench himself and almost drowns in the attempt. He is saved by Davy Jones. Jack talks Jones into raising the Wench for him and giving him 13 years as captain in exchange before he has to give his soul to Jones. Jack renames the Wicked Wench, the Black Pearl. He gets his compass and crews the Pearl (it's clear he had the compass before he crews the pearl). Jack loses the Pearl and it's three years before the Swans, Norington and Will Turner come to the Caribbean (the start of the first movie) and ten years after he loses the Pearl before he gets it back!

Now the timing is not as important as the sequence of events. Those should not be changed. I would suggest NOT changing the main quest into the Jack Sparrow Story, but rather create a East India Company office at Port Royal (Redman) with Becket. Let the main character interact with Becket just like he/she does with the Gov but create all the necessary side quests with Becket. Link them the the main quests to make sure they flow. Include Becket giving the main character the Wicked Wench once they are high enough level to command said ship. Say when the storm his, the main character loses his ships, he meets back up with his officers and after taking over the pirate ship and the next time he goes the the East India Company office, Becket gives him the Wench.

Change the item found in the Temple to a stone tablet that has the story of Isla de Morta (the item Silhart wants). The undead pirate ship could still be there (after all why should their only be one ghost ship) and have Silhart displaced at this point. The game continues with the Jack losing Wench before getting his compass, raising the Wench and losing the pearl (Barbossa could be an officer Becket assigns to the Wench when he gives it Jack, sort of a spy, Barbossa would rather have the treasure of Isla de Morta than work for Becket). Swan could be sent to Port Royal replacing Brin while the main character spends some time as pirate while working on how to get the pearl back.

Just some suggestions. I would think it would be easier to leave the main quest alone and make up the side quests necessary and add a second main question after the first.

I am well into that at the moment - pretty close to your suggestions.

i certainly agree with that. but you're forgetting something: tia dalma and the compass. jack got the compass from her, before the events you mentioned. maybe that should just be skipped. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> although i don't like doing it.

I didn't plan skipping it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

no, Jack gets the compass but it's not clear when. It seems that the main reason Jack gets the compass is to find the treasure. It follows that this would be after he learns of the treasure. I would suggest that it is also after his falling out with Becket. After all, if he could find anything his heart desired, why would he be working for the East India Trading company?

Or this story could be a different one alltogether.
What happened <i>between</i> <u>Dead Man's Chest</u> and <u>At World's End</u>? There are some details, but it is mostly open for us to create whatever we wish. There are some basics:
- Lord Beckett controls Port Royale, and because he holds Davy Jones' heart... most of the world, or at least the seven seas.
- The pirate Sao Feng, residing in Singapore, is contacted by Beckett and an alliance is made.
- Barbossa joins Will, Elizabeth, and Jack's old crew to rescue Sparrow.
- Norrington is made Admiral and put in command of the war-like aspects of the East India Company (Which explains the new color scheme of his uniform- blue and buff, not blue and white of the Royal Navy, and the epaulets, which were not made part of the RN's uniform until 1795.)
- It has been said that Bootstrap Bill and Captain Grant/Teauge Sparrow (Jack's father) make an alliance to find their sons. (Sparrow Sr. is a pirate lord of Madagascar, one of the "pirate lords from the four corners of the Earth" mentioned in the trailer and part of the <i>Bretheren of the Coast</i>.)

This provides us with a lot of room to make quests, tweak the stock main quest, and all that fun stuff.
We can go with several ideas:
- You are an honest man who works for Beckett at first, then goes pirate (or if you want, to remain a corrupt merchantman.)
- You seek a career in the EIC under Norrington, ultimately under Beckett... a sort of naval career.
- You join the Royal Navy in an attempt to retake Port Royal and restore proper order.
- You are part of the crew looking for Jack (Jack and the Pearl are the artifact in some way.) You could either be a movie character or a made up character that joins Barbossa, thus making a fleet looking for Sparrow.
- You are Sao Feng or a pirate under his reign who has made an alliance with the EIC.
- You are one of the pirate lords and a member of the <i>BotC</i> who come together for the final showdown.
- You are a freebooter who doesn't have a linear story, you do whatever, whenever, however, wherever... the pirate way!

Of course, other ideas, comments, etc. are welcomed. This doesn't have to be what we do, but I thought this was a fun idea and had to throw it in the hat. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

We might want to not make this more complicated than it is. It is already a major undertaking without thinking up yet more good ideas. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

BTW: What happens between Dead Man's Chest and At World's End? Answer: Not much. Although there is quite a while between CotBP and DMC, AWE starts at just after DMC ends.

I think the idea that Bootstrap and Teague make an alliance to find their sons might be a false rumour. The only place I read that was in a fake trailer description. The same trailer description, in fact, that called Jack's father GRANT Sparrow instead of Teague Sparrow.

Indeed, but between DMC and AWE you get all the big characters and all.
I sorta felt that this would stir things up a bit, but I felt the idea needed some exposure. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
I thought I heard we want to make Redmond and Seilhard into Port Royale and Beckett, but Beckett doesn't have Pt. Royale until DMC...

I don`t know if the fighting scene in the cave is done but I didn`t like the skeleton Jack Sparrow of Jack Sparrow JR. So I made some changes and now I have made this:

<img src="http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l68/Thomas_the_Terror/JackSkeleton.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Good enough?

woah! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> good, yes, but the first time i saw him it looked like a major skin problem! pity you can't give him the clothes he has in the movie where you can see the bones and such. to make a perfect one you'd need to adjust a skeleton model. but this one is still quite good.

This wouldn't be funny at all... That would make a kind of save-the-world looking main quest! I don't think it would be a good idea to turn PotC into this kind of childish manicheist game.
By the way, you forgot one possibility :
- you serve any of the other powers in the Archipelago who feel very anoyed to have such a dangerous neighbor.

Thanks for the forgotten option.

However, I feel that if he rules everything, it is more of a "fight for survival" sort of plot. Saving the world means to serve others, and if you're a pirate, the only one you serve is yourself! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
If you're with Beckett, its a crush piracy plot, if you're with some other formidable force, its a destroy the enemy plot.

The only way it'd be "save the world" was if you were a loner serving all nations that are all somehow allies with you, save Beckett of course!

Wait a minute. Does this means that the current main quest will be completeley changed? There was an earlier suggestion about making the main quest dependant on the selected player character. Perhaps it was mine. I don't really know.

well, certainly not completely. it will basically be the original main quest, but with different characters and dialogue. there will also likely be a large section that will continue the quest.

For sure Morgan Terror, but the question was : <b>will we be able to play the old main quest unchanged if we like to?</b> Because personaly I will maybe try the changed main quest once, but that's all. I'm reluctant in turning this game into the movies. It is funny to play sometimes as Jack Sparrow, and long ago I did suggest to have different dialogs depending on the main character, and indeed especially in the case you are playing Jack Sparrow. But it should stay in my opinion "just for the fun".
Shortly before Pieter started this topic, someone asked if the main quest could be changed a little, and everyone refused. ('the main quest is good enough as it is', 'why messing with something that is working right, that will cause lots of problems' etc.) But when Pieter suggested to make the game fit a little more to the movie, the same people all agreed, immediatly.
Personaly, I would have prefered to improve the main quest in some aspects - the war between England and France, and Danielle, for exemple. Or even more troubles coming from the Black Pearl - like you enter in Isla Muelle town coming from the habor, it's night time... you pass the gates, and then... surprise! The spanish soldiers are on the ground, dead, and under the moonlight evil squeletons come closer. They want... whatever, the chest, the medailon, the statue - it doesn't matter, but this time they won't ask it politly, they will kill you to get it - and they are immortal. Would have follow a terrible cat and mouse's game, in the Isla Muelle town asleep. To escape from them you would have jump from those strange bridges onto the roof of a little house, then on the ground... You run for you life... Isn't it great... And as you wrote '0' in Buildsetting.h for SKELETON_CHANCE, that would have been a perfect occasion to see those famous cursed sailors from the BlackPearl.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->There was an earlier suggestion about making the main quest dependant on the selected player character.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Pieter Boelen didn't like the idea. But he suggested checking the outfit & name of the main character. Althought I fear this may cause more trouble - what if you change your outfit or name in the middle of the quest?...

About that poor Danielle :

- May I introduce you Danielle Greed! With Nathanael Hawk, she will be an available main character you will be able to chose at the begining of the game.
- A female pirate? Wow! Amazing! Fantastic! Is it really true?
- Her... Finaly no, she will just be an optional character in the main quest, that will follow you. There will be only one playable character, in the traditional Nicolas Sharp style. Now let's release the game with Disney and add ugly squeletons.
(quite a long time after, after several years of active modding...)
- Hey guys! Lets change the main quest to fit the movie! It's now Jack Sparrow main quest! We're going to change all the characters!
- And what about Danielle?
- who?...

That's a good reason for being able to choose if you want to play the unchanged main quest or not.

<!--quoteo(post=189002:date=Apr 10 2007, 11:56 AM:name=Commodore John Paul Jones)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Commodore John Paul Jones @ Apr 10 2007, 11:56 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Danielle could always be Annamaria or someone like that.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

In my opinion, using Annamaria instead of Danielle would be ideal especially if we were going to alter the main quest to be Jack Sparrow's story. Danielle's character, or Annamaria if you should choose to use her as the main story line is altered, is an important component in the story. I agree with Pieter that we simply either not have the time or the skill to completely recreate the main quest, it would simply be far to much work. So per his suggestion if we intend to simply tailor the already existing main quest to fit the story of the infamous Jack Sparrow, I would be led to belive that if we simply disregard Danielle, then I doubt we could addequately substitue Jack's story in for the current main quest.

I do think that this is a phenominal idea. As long as I've played POTC, especially before I began to use the build mods, it always rather annoyed me that it had very little to do with the movies. I also think it would be kinda cool to follow Jack Sparrow's story line. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />
