Ship class names

Probably not, which is why I (and Alan) suggest Grimm post his proposed changes here so we can discuss them! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Why, my changed ship names I posted already. As for the rest, it´s going to be a long list (like, all the ships in b11 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> ). But you asked for it, so you´ll get it. The strings in brackets are the values I thought up. So, this is how it´s to be read: Shipname/Class/maxCrew/gun caliber.

Yacht/6(5)/60(90)/12
Barque(Brig)/6(4)/80(140)/12(16)
Galeoth(Pinnace)/5(6)/90(64)/12
Xebec(Barque)/5(4)/100(126)/16
Sloop/5/100(80)/12
Caravel/74(3)/240(140)/12
Fleut/4(3)/270(170)/16
Brig(Brigantine)/3(4)/160(150)/16
Galeon/3(2)/450(300)/16(24)
Heavy Galleon/3(2)/500(360)/16(24)
Pinnace(Merchantman)/3/300(200)/16
Frigate/2/400(280)/24
Corvette/2(3)/200(220)/24
Battleship(War Galleon?)/1/650(400)/24(32)
ManOWar/1/1000(480)/24(32)
BlackPearl/1/600(280)/32
Fearless/1/580(230)/32
BlackPearlLS/2(1)/500(250)/32
Lineship/2(1)/500(320)/32
Warship/2(1)/580(360)/32

If there´s a ship I haven´t posted it was because I intended to make no change on that one. My suggestions are purely based on my personal feelings and a bit on the old Pirates! Gold manual. Maybe in some cases the min. Crew has to be adjusted as well, but atm I have no values for those with me.

S now, either <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" /> me or <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> with me.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Why, thank you, Inez.

Going home on train today, I´ve had some time to think, so I came up with some additional suggestions. One is because of the event I posted in the "Nutty Thangs..."- topic, change the gun caliber for the corvette to 16, so she´s definitely weaker than the frigate.

The I woder whether we really need both Lineship and Warship as they are, in effect, they´re equal.

Maybe another exchange of names would be in place, call the Man O´War a Ship of the Line, and the Lineship a MoW.

Well, not exactly a heated deabate. Either you all agree totally with me (which I consider unlikely, because then you would have made the changes already) or you think it complete rubbish not worthy of discussion.

Well, I don't have much to say about it because I'm not any kind of expert, and I don't have a lot of time to research these things at the moment. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> There always has been discussion on what to do with the ships and their designations, and I know there was some effort to change them - tho I'm not sure whether anything ever was done past NathanKell's tweaking of the parameters that make the ship sail... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

A lot of times projects are suggested and get put on someone's list, but that someone never gets to it for one reason or another... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

I haven't answered because I can't really contribute to this, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> but it is always a good idea to get feedback from everyone here. Unfortunately, a lot of the historical scholars that were here before have gone on to other things and are not here now... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

What you've done looks good to me - and I can only offer the opinion that it's probably a better system than the one that's in the game now... I'm not so sure that's a helpful comment, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> which is why I didn't offer it before now. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

Well said, Catalina, as usual.

Most times the person who comes up with an idea will be the one to implement it, and since you, Grim, volunteered, I don't object to your doing it in whatever way you find appropriate. That said, I still would prefer if you (or whoever does it) consulted some historical literature and not just an other game's manual. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />
I myself know nothing about ships, so whatever you decide will be allright with me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Where have all the experts gone ? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Hm, Nathan Kells monogram shows now and then in the Shipsinit.c file, I guess he did change some values. My question´s not so much about the historical accuracy per se, it´s actually more about HOW to change the values at all. After we know how to do that, anyone can do what seems appropriate. Unfortunately, that´s one part that´s missing in the Wiki - which is in any other respect the best modding information source.

Yes, the Wiki is a work in progress - any modder can add anything that will help - if they can find the time to do so. Unfortunately a lot of a modder's time is taken up with their assorted projects - and they don't have much time to instruct. I'm always grateful for whatever info is "passed on" by anyone. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Sharing is best! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

<!--`QuoteBegin-v_Grimmelshausen`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(v_Grimmelshausen)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Well, then i´ll have to overcome my fears of experimenting and just try it myself.[/quote]Yup, that's how a lot of modders - including myself - got started! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Just ask if you get stuck. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

It´s not that I´m trying to write any code, editing a few numberso ought to go easy enough. But I guess, changing something in any kind of an -init file requires a `re-init` when starting the game, right?

Yes, just hit the "I" key and you should be okay. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

All right, I´ve taken (once again) a look into the Shipsinit file. And day by day I dive deeper into the code -"aye, the code" <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> - and I found the functions canencounter and canbuy. I suppose, setting canencounter to "false" means I can´t encounter this shiptype by chance (like the Mefisto or the original Black Pearl). So, If I don´t want a ship to appear in the game - and I don´t much like the different variations of the Black Pearl theme, a question of personal taste - I just can disable them by adding the line canencounter = false.
Does this work equivalent with the canbuy function? I don´t like the fact I should be able actually to buy a Corvette or even a Man of War. After all, those were ships built for the different nation´s navies only.

Yes, that canencounter is for the special quest ships. Same with the canbuy. And I suppose you can disable any you care to disable for yourself - I'd think that you could buy (or sell) a ship like that at the pirate shipyard only - after all, a stolen ship is a stolen ship! But the question is, should it be considered illegal to possess one of those `navy-tupe` ships? Some navies "decommission" old ships... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" /> Don't know how historically probable that is, probably not at all is my guess... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> Just rambling. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

That´s true for Corvettes or Frigates, but Battleships and Man O´ Wars? And did they indeed decommission ships back then? They had few enough - that´s why all navies hired privateers, after all, so decommissioning wouldn´t make much sense to me.

And when all is being said - it´s just a game, and, as a wise person around here once (or twice) said: If you don´t like it, mod it.

But, what I was about to write in the first place, changing the ship´s stats worked fine with me, except for the classes. In the ship´s status screen and the shipyard the modded classes are shown, but the little icons on the sailing screen show the original class number - I don´t know why. Not that it matters that much, after all.

Actually it would make sense if some navies decommissioned older ships. These elderly warships would be converted to transports, prison hulks, etc. If the Patrick O'Brian series is anything to go by... Speaking of which I need to get back into them...I finisehd Far side of the World awhile back.

I rely a lot on those little icons when looking for a battle. I don't want to waste my time on a little ship when I'm looking for bigger prey. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

There probably is a way to change them, but it may not be as simple as changing a parameter. I don't know a lot about those icons, tho. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

The icons didn´t change at all, but then, they weren´t supposed to, except the class number. But as every shiptype has it´s unique icon, they´re all right with me.

speaking of common.ini and ships_init.c i am also trying to change certain ship classes and also give them a correct rating (this means, that ships, which are not fully rigged are rated 0 ; so anything smaller than a light frigate is not rated). unfortunately i couldnt locate ship class names like "super frigate" or "fast schooner" in the common.ini or ships_init.c, where are they? and in which file are the refship.canbuy values?
