Solved Smuggling CTD and Friendly Enemies???

Hi there,

Been playing the game solid for a couple days on Build 14 Beta 2.5 (Installed everything as per normal, this is the first issue i've had).

Been saving a lot but come across this repeating crash-to-desktop at the exact same point in the game.

Game info:
Playing as "Buccaneer", named my guy "Blackbeard".
Currently running around as Vanderdecken or whatever his name is, the secret ship selling guy traded skins with me lol.
Purchased the Dauntless 1st class, fitted out a few upgrades, captured a ship then bought another and upgraded the captured one, so I have 3 in my fleet including myself.
Purchased an absolute sh*t-ton of coffee & paprika from Puerto Rico to sell to a Smuggler in Nevis.
I have done this loads of times without fail (great way of getting money Smugglers are), like I previously said this is the only CTD or error I have had.
Basically what happens is, I moor on the beach with my fleet of illict goods-carrying ships, I complete the transaction with him, the troops start running to me, dodge them tap the "Sea" transition when I am next to the rowboat to take me to my ship, where I will fight my way out of the English coastguard fleet, but instead of taking me to my ship the game freezes (tried it several times same result) and CTD's.

But couldn't find "Deck view at sea" to try playing with it. However I have tried fast travelling onto my boat, which works, then go to the helm click "Sea" and it crashes as before. I am wondering if there is an issue here or something that can resolve it, as I currently have no quests, just playing Free play with out cheats.

I could not find an error.log.

Hope someone knows how to sort this, would love to continue my current game.

Would also like to thank all the developers who have made this gem, I remember playing this game on the original Xbox when I was much younger and spending hours drawing maps of the caribbean and having lists of goods drawn up :p

Edit: I found some old posts when I was playing an early version of Build 14 back in 2010, fancy that!! I completely forgot. Well done on the mod anniversary release I must say.
 
Massive smuggling operations? Hmm, haven't tried smuggling in pretty much forever.

Unfortunately the log messages don't tell us anything useful either. :modding

Perhaps there are ships that aren't loading properly, perhaps due to the larger scale of my smuggling operation this time around.
Previous operations I was bringing in around 200-400k, this one was just short off 1 million gold.

EDIT: I am able to leave to "Sea" when I do not interact with the Smuggler.
EDIT#2: I have waited in the Map for a bit, till was getting twilight, tried it again, did not get an interaction with the Coastguard running at me (that there "lucky" occurrence for a bad-man smuggler like myself), and no crash!
I will make sure to save more frequently when interacting with Smugglers, but perhaps this was a one-off occurrence.
Will post back if I discover this to happen again (as I tend to live off Ebony/Paprika/Coffee Smugglers in Nevis).
 
Indeed I do believe you're right. Sea AI groups have been known to be crash-worthy in the past.
And Nevis doesn't HAVE that many quest ship locators (only 11), which could be confusing the game code.
 
Perhaps there is a modifier somewhere that just keeps scaling up the coastguard. However in the meantime I shall make a point to increase my Luck (might reduce the occurrence of coastguard AI).

If I am making Smuggling runs of >200k (likely to be 1-2million now with my bigger ships) I shall ensure I keep quick-loading my save until no troops, ergo no coastguard, attack my little operation. Not a fan of abusing saves, which puts me at an advantage to the previous save-point, but I guess in this instance can't be helped.

Not worried about this bug, as I believe doing the above can avoid it somewhat. However I would like to see how my future fleet of 4 dauntless fare against the coastguard though. ;)

Extract attached to PROGRAM\SEA_AI . This will make the game use only those quest ship locators that actually exist.
I tested this at Eleuthera, which has only 10 with the default having originally been set to 16. Ships appear fine and no SEA: Error messages.
Please let me know if that improves matters anything.

Hum; managed to get rid of most of those error messages. Have to look into those Coastal_Guards specifically though.
Apparently they want to be generated on no locator at all!

Could you upload a savegame of yours on the shore? Then I can go and test this myself.
 
Sure.

I believe the encounters are random and you can tell if the Coastguard will trigger if the troops storm the beach right after trading with the Smuggler. So might take some re-loading/waiting on map.

Bug confirmed; crashes for me too. This is especially brilliant now that I managed to get rid of ALL those error messages in compile.log and it STILL crashes. :facepalm
The search continues....
 
I narrowed it down. If I get rid of ALL coast guard ship generating code, the game DOESN'T crash. :cheeky

Sounds like recreating Coastguard generating code could be a future milestone, perhaps there are quest-related ship generators that could be tweaked for such a thing?

Hopefully I can maybe help with the mod in the future.

The coast guard generating looks to work pretty much exactly like the governor ship hunting ships do.

I managed to make a ship appear using the Treasure Quest Pirate code. But he LIKES me! Won't attack despite me trying to set him as my ENEMY! :shock

Another question: Anyone been able to complete some successful smuggling actions lately that did result in a coast guard being generated?
Was the coast guard ship enemy to you or friendly? Even if you are generally friendly with England, if the coast guard ship is English, is she hostile to you?
As per the code, she ruddy bloody well should be! But I'm getting the distinct impression that is NOT happening.

xD As a trader(smuggler) I got fed up of being attacked.. so paid the respective people in Town Hall after I made some money.

Hmm, try perhaps changing the disposition of the character temporarily? such as the code that would be called upon hoisting the flag of a different nation?

I have been using the fake flag thing a lot, but stopped doing it after a while. I did try setting myself to pirates before doing a smuggling run, but the crash happened as per normal. Just like when I have my Personal flag hoisted.
I am not sure if I have been recognized or not, but my "currently known as" did change to "unknown pirate" then "unknown freebooter" so perhaps.

Yes if they have reason to, such as coastguard or I have a quest passenger who is of an enemy nation they thus class me as enemy no matter what flag I hoist.

Before I was selling goods well under 1-2m, I had no issues selling about 200-350k gold of contraband. But seemed to get the issues arise after I got more ships and thus 700k+ gold per smuggling run.

Initially friendly (for about 1 second) then turned enemy and begun to attack.

Yes the english would actually start off as grey on the map (perhaps neutral), a second or two passes and they begin firing (turn red and thus enemy)

Certainly is! I have no idea why it even began happening, only that after I got more ships and more contraband the crashes began.
