some fixes

I'll try this if I can remember to. Most all of the things that are needed to do are things that I normally do not do.
 
Yeah, i don't even know what works and what doesn't yet because i rarely get into the situations where my fixes apply. All the other groups seem to be working okay though. It's the pirates that were the buggiest, although i'll probably discover that the soldiers got some issues too.
