splash splash splash

with ship battles there is al this rubble from ships that splash into the water. but if you turn of this rubble and smoke off in buildsettings, those splashes are still comming in ship battles... how can i turn the splashes off? they make the game(buid 14 alpha 7) run slow. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" />

Splashes in the water are caused only by cannon balls. As far as I know this can't be turned off.

splashes are also caused by debris falling in the water. i'd turn the particel effects lower. that should turn down the debris, maybe even remove it in such a matter that you only get it with critical hits, like in the stock game.

I have never seen splashes caused by debris. There's two kind of splashes: One is caused by cannon balls, the other is generated around the ship when it is hit badly or sinks.

i'm absolutely certain i get splashes from debris. it's even so in build 12.1. maybe it's because i put the particle effects to the max.

I don't recall any actual splashes when debris hits the water. Sure splashes and debris show up at the same time sometimes, but the splashes are not caused BY the debris, as far as I know.

i think i've seen enough debris from ships already to be certain about that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> but i'll check once i get build 13, or when i play the game again with build 12.1.

the splashes are not all from the cannonballs, im sure. with a ship with eh.. 16 cannons i see a lot more than 16(maybe 30 or something) splashes and even if i turn the effects off these splashes are still there and theres no derbis <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

I suggest looking at extra particle explosion effects code, (Merciless Mark code?).

Yep, this describes it all (3 heads are better than one)<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->#define SHIPHIT_PARTICLES    3
// The higher the setting the more effects (choose a lower setting if you get performance problems)
// 0: Stock PotC (red-orange explosion on hit)
// 1: Minimal hit effects (small puffs of gray smoke)
// 2: Recommended hit effects (puffs and splinters)
// 3: Excessive hit debris effects (plumes of planks and barrels, water splashes, flashes and smoke - ship explosions extensive)<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

landrot, you can see that the default 3 may add much graphics overhead.
Experiment with those settings and let us know.

Also if you could, what are the specs of your rig, CPU, OS, ram, and most importantly, graphics card.

Morgan, it sounds like you keep replaying different versions of the game over and over. I guess you would know what's causing splashes and what isn't.

Is 3 the default for the shiphit particles in Build 13? I forgot. It's 2 in Build 14 Alpha; pretty sure of that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Can't say. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
I had just installed B13 but immediately used Hook's FixBS to get my old settings.

okay.. ive done some research and i find out that SHIPHIT_PARTICLES in BuildSettings.h dont work! how can i change that now?? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

What do you mean by "don't work"?
What did you do exactly that didn't work?

i mean <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->#define SHIPHIT_PARTICLES    3
// The higher the setting the more effects (choose a lower setting if you get performance problems)
// 0: Stock PotC (red-orange explosion on hit)

// 2: Recommended hit effects (puffs and splinters)
// 3: Excessive hit debris effects (plumes of planks and barrels, water splashes, flashes and smoke - ship explosions extensive)<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
this all does not work.. the puffs and barrels and things wont go away

Did you hit the F11 key after making the changes (change it to 0 or 1) and opening a saved game? That will re-initialize some of the game functions.

Or, you may have to start a new game for the change to take effect.

kevin

i start a new game after making the changes. i also noticed that the #define PLAY_INVASION_MOVIE dont work. i always see the invasion movie....
