Build 14 Beta 1 Feedback

I have said this is confirmed in like 6 different threads and will be fixed in patch 1 :dance

Havana is also confirmed (read the BUG tracker)

I just want to tell all the talented artists who worked on this project that I'm now addicted to this game. :bow My wife thanks you all very much. xD:

You have certainly accomplished what you all have set out to do because I really enjoy the depth of the Caribbean, "age-o-sail" experience i am getting. Thank you mates from the salty bottom of me heart. :onya

I just wanted to ask if the ships are supposed to have lights on them at night and is there supposed to be light flashing when cannons fire?

No the light feature is a CoAS feature :(

Not sure about the cannons, but again could be a CoAS feature

I just want to say that this is a big world that will give me much enjoyment while exploring.

Earlier I mentioned getting stuck on the Antigua pier. Since then I stumbled across the Davey Jones quest. I've now been to Antigua 4-5 times without getting stuck. Except when I forget to remove my officers first and they clog up the pier......... This quest was hard on me. I lost a ship (Frigate Transport) and my best officer. That FrigT is a neat ship! It will turn on a dime and give you change back. I've sunk Frigates and captured an East Indiaman with it. LOL. It was a real shock when I transferred me flag to it. It's handling can be described as "glacial".

Historical East Indiamen weren't prized for their speed, sailability or durability either...

But they had plenty of firepower and that got somewhere!

Yeah, the Indie needs something like a Grand Schooner to escort it. The GS keeps the pesky small ships off it while it broadsides the big ones.

The previous post is irrelevant now. That was my 2nd Build 14. It got so FUBAR'ed it died. This 3rd attempt is FUBAR'ed also. I'm just waiting to see how long it lasts. But it is a LOT of fun with epic running battles and 6 -10 ship knife fights on the few occasions when it does run.

It would be interesting to take your after action reviews to note what was broken and where, and get the persons with coding ability to work on those issues real time, but unfortunately with the current development ethos (or lack thereof), that's never going to happen until May.

It's a pity because two shorts months of doing just that changed a lot of things for the better.

Well, build 14-3 died. It wouldn't start. So I cleaned out the parent folder and did ANOTHER full scan with good (non macroshaft) utilities. It found nothing unusual again. Installed build 14-4 with lots of reboots. This one might be a keeper. It is running much better than previous attempts. Even the fractals are much less in evidence. Time will tell.
I can't recall another program crashing this regularly, and I bought my first computer in 1983. Well, there was one that exploded my hd while running. After every session I HAD to defrag it, it was so fragmented.

This is where build 14-2 died. A small island with black all around. It was interesting watching two decks of people energetically waving their swords about.

SWS if you actaullly look around the forum you will see mikkit's problem is very unique and I have been working really hard to try and help him fix it... all my attempts have been in vain though and havnt worked :(

As for there being no work done that is complete BULL, I have the next patch compileing and there are actually many code changes so dont say stuff that you dont know about!

Just cause your not doing any work at all doesnt mean no one else is doing work... the world doesnt revolved around you!
The fact that you have come back to post here, and being very inappropiate about it (oh the Build Mod is dead, no work will be done till may, no one will help you).
One it hurts me as Ive been working my butt off trying to keep things going
Two you dont know everything that is going on
Three I have been helping but cant find what this problem is

In another topic you went off at a member whos English is definatly not his first language. He constantly points this out and asks me and the other moderators to edit his tutorials for better english. If you think this forum isnt a nice forum I would like to see you last on one of the other forums Im appart of

Very interesting screenshot, for sure. I could be wrong - but it looks like two locations were loaded together. Something similar happen to me with a earlier version of Build 14 (possibly a pre-build14) but I was never able to recreate it, to the point I thought I was so tired I had made up the whole thing. Were you able to walk on the beach? Judging at the picture, it looks like your character is floating up the sea bed, so the answer is likely no... Did you try using sidesteps to get closer to the cabin?
It would appear that the main character was loaded on a beach location locator, while the boarding parties were loaded on locators of the boarding location. Interesting as well. Were there several guys standing on the same locators, or were there only two - it's hard to tell on your screenshot! Were they standing at the same place, or did they move as well (functionnal patch)?

Boarding scene mixed up with something else, maybe related to the code that adds port/shore scene when you are on deck. That's all I can tell.

i've had such an instance myself. in my case, the boarding deck ended up in the tavern. i think the reason was that i eliminated a quest-related ship, which i DID have to eliminate, but the game didn't expect me to do so by boarding. it expected me to sink it, and then it would teleport me to the tavern. instead, it teleported me right in the middle of the boarding sequence. it seems the instance of elimination by boarding should be taken into account in the quest triggers.

so the obvious question is, did you board a ship before that happened?

EDIT: i've taken a closer look, and the boarding deck is visible right at the point where the last enemy boarder was killed, in the cabin, meaning that you had definately eliminated the ship in question. my theory adds up, at least.

and i see simple virtual sailor came up with the same idea.

Aha, so this might not be that uncommon after all... In a tavern?

In my case it was FdF beach, with medium or small ship deck. And I remember I could walk on the beach, to my surprise. I don't remember if I went to the beach out my ship by walking normaly or by using sidesteps, that's why I'd really love to recreate that bug... If it was the first option, could you imagine! Multi-patches loading!
But yes, the second option si much more likely.

it get's better. i had it happen twice at once. in the tavern, i had some dialogue (the sight of two guys talking calmly while it looks like a ship got catapulted through the bar? priceless. xD:), and got teleported to the harbor. there, i had no problems at all, but it wasn't until i boarded my ship that the REALLY wierd stuff started happening. don't quite remeber what it was, but i think the land/sea controls and interfaces got thrown into a blender and prestented to me as some kind of frankenstinian creation.

time and place: defeating the two animists' ships off ex-greenford while meeting up with the Montanez. don't think it's called spreightstown now, it's the other one. i think. at barbados, anyway.

Interesting thoughts.

What happened, hopefully without giving out spoilers.

This all revolves around a fight over a gold statue and then a storm. In build 13 it goes into slow mo mode here. Basically the game collapses into scrambled eggs, with everything jumbled up together. Far earlier I escorted a merchant to Eluethera. He didn't show at the pier, but stayed in his cabin. There he used dialogue from right after that storm that hasn't happened yet. Then the Davey Jones quest got messed up. Then came the fight. I boarded the ship with a crew consisting of men, women in dresses, and skeletons. ( A side note here. In the current build I have no boarding crew. Just my officers and myself. I actually captured a Class 1 Man o' War last nite like that! ) When the Captain died I was transported to this little island in a sea of black. There was a person there talking about where to go next. I could move freely and watched the boarding party going at it up on top of the cliff. Because I save often I was able to do this several times. In that build (build 14-3) everyone moved just a little bit slow also.

In a nutshell, I seem to keep getting a bad download and/or a bad install, which causes the program to run poorly before collapsing into scrambled eggs. I have spent hours looking for hardware issues here. I have old programs on this puter that have been running flawlessly for years. What is unique about this program that is causing these issues? I like the bigger, more detailed world of build 14 better, but build 13 ran much better.

well, potc has the problem that all it's triggers try to happen all at once, and too many of them have exactly the same priority. and in build 14 there are a LOT of triggers going off at once (for example, two quests needing the same location for two different scenes at the same time. that messes things up pretty bad) that, and the modding community clearly knows less about avoiding those problems than professional developers.

Ah. That explains the scrambled eggs syndrome. It sounds like it is a bad thing to have more than one quest going at a time. Is it possible to delete an ongoing quest? I already have 4 or 5 quests going that I have stumbled across in my random wanderings.

The game can usually cope with more than one quest at a time. But too many can cause problems :yes

Especially if they end up conflicting with each other

Just out of interest - which quest headers do you currently have active in your quest-book ? :?

the clincher only appears when those quests need the same location. if they need different locations, you should be okay. just finish one for each place at a time. i'd recommend trying to learn which locations those quests need first and then try to see which quests can be played at the same time on your next playthrough.

Still on my first proppa cup o' coffee..... :nerbz

What quests are active:

Find the traitor named Raoul Rheims. This is currently working well.

Deliver a closed chest. It's working, but finishing it is problematical. I need to go to Barbados and Martinique, but both France and England are pushing minus 100 on the pissed-o-meter. And I'm a well known pirate. :wp

Elizabeth Shaw's disappearance. Methinks this one is broken and I can't continue it. Would like to delete it.

Artois Voisey. Well, it was kind of an unusual battle. I needed to spy on Speightstown, and instead of fighting my way across the island I decided to sail to a secluded spot and walk in from there. When I boarded my ships (a Grand Schooner and an enhanced(?) Xebec commanded by Arty) I noticed the weather. Moderate seas with rain, light wind, and FOG. Then I noticed that the French fleet was attacking. One Light Frigate, 3 Frigates, an East Indiaman, and a 3rd rate Man o' War. :shock I set a trap which worked, sallied forth and got lost in the fog, made it back into port, and then finished the battle there. For much of the battle all I could see of opposing ships was the tops of their masts. The gunsmoke was heavy. In port Arty got too close to the man o' war and got his silly self sunk by a volley from the fort. :ko I used up all my balls and chains and was spitting grapes at that Leviathon and feeling silly about it. Boarding Party! :)) The final count was the MoW and light frigate limped away, the Indie surrendered, one frigate was captured, and 2 frigates sunk. But I lost Artois Voisey, so that quest is over I suppose.

The Saga of the Blacque Family. This is interesting! I recently learned new things and want to continue this one. No ideer where to go next.

Just found Fred Bob too. He has proven to be quite capable. :dance
