New or Improved ships ...

Hmmm... This sails reminds me something... Didn't you use SeaDogs 'parusa_bark_p.tf' texture file?...
...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

No, I never played Sea Dogs and don't have access to any of its files.

The build has a loading screen called "Battle.tga" which was the inspiration.

I made mine by re-coloring "Sail_Whole_White_Plain.tga" and then renaming it "Sail_Whole_Red_Plain.tga" so I could switch to them in game. That way only player (me) has them and the other ships use national emblems.

Progress on the Caravel

wow! it looks excellent! massive improvement over the stock caravel. one thing though.....why do i get the feeling that the hull model has changed?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Lord Nelson

It hasn't, only the masts and rigging have been changed.

I'm not done skinning yet, but sometimes, you can create the impression that the model has changed just by changing the skin.

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Petros!

i noticed why it looked like the model was changed. it's those curved planks on the bottom half of the visible hull. funny how little things make such a big difference.

anyone got news on Kaziete's possible HMS Victory?

Looks much more like the real thing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

At the moment Kazeite is working on getting Merciless Mark's improved HMS Surprise in the game.

Nice work there, Petros. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Cheers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> and thanks all.

This is the finished look <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" /> of the new caravel. Now for a name and stats. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

A closer look at some detail.

Ooohh! Very nice! My main dilemma is that you do all these really cool skins on ships that I don't often sail. I've sailed around on the dutch fleut just because it is such a cool ship, but it is rather impractical for much of anything. In short, why must you tempt me with all of these beautiful ships! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

(Actually, its a great problem to have!)

She is a beauty. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Amazing, Petros! Simply amazing! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

Now what to do with her?

I've played the opening months game-time with caravels before, as a merchant.
They are the slowest ship in the game! This one has to be different.

Do I drop HP and cargo and up the speed and turning, going from

Cargo 2500
HP 2500
Speed 8
Turning 25
Crew 48/240

to
Cargo 1500
HP 1500
Speed 10
Turning 30
Crew 40/200

Perhaps I should drop/disable some cannon going from 32 down to 26 and make it a class 5 ship?

Petros, for what its worth, Caravels, were small, very slow, unstable and not very maneuverable ships. These ships were excellent for long voyages and were very weatherly. Caravels were rarely used as fighting vessels because they lacked speed, stability and good maneuverablity. However, the exception to this was the "Caravela de Armada", a four masted adaptation of the Portuguese "Caravela Renonda". This was basically a naval vessel with increased capacity and better stability, but speed (7 to 9 knots) was basically unchanged. Caravels were just slow ships, designed to ride the ocean waves. Having built several models of this type ship, they generally carried around 24 to 26 cannon.

As a suggestion, I would go with the first set of numbers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Might this website be useful?

Thanks Cpt Fabris and Meigger

I'm looking at that site and others.

One thing that stands out is that there was so much variation in a design that spans hundreds of years, and that we know so little about.

Just felt I should put in my feelings that you are doing an incredible job on your new ships, Petros.

I've got to say, its very refreshing to see so many nice new skins and models being done.

Eventually I'd love to chat with you over on the AOP side as well. I'll be posting a list of ship types I'd like to see done up, quite expanded, though some of them may just be different names for the same ship.

Again, Kudos!

that ship is gorgeous!! I'll echo the sentiments about being tempted to sail ships not my normal choice due to all the excellent re-modelling/re-skinning talented people have been doing. Awesome effort Petros - i think IF i was to make the journey from europe to the Caribbean - that ship is the one i'd trust to get there safely, she looks very sea-worthy matey <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Petros,
Will these beautiful ships make it into the Build 13 or are they going to wait until 13.1?

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Doober

As it stands now, build 13 has my:
Ship of the line
Light Frigate 2
Pirate Corvette

... and with recently improved skins, my
War Galleon
Merchantman
Light Galleon
Dutch Fleut
Privateer

For inclusion in Build 13.1 I'm lining up:
Ketch
Royal Galleon
War Galleon 2
Light Caravel

I'm also planning a fast barque.
(I've just been a bad pirate and gone off playing "Siege of Avalon" 1999-2001)
