Wacky News Stories

A Republican representative has introduced a spending bill amendment aimed at promoting the use of contraception – by horses.

Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) introduced the amendment, which would control the population of wild horses and burros as an alternative to the costly practice of capturing the animals and holding them in pens, which the Bureau of Land Management currently employs.

The amendment would modify the budget to bar “funds made available by this Act [from being] used for the gathers and removals of free-roaming wild horses and burros, except for the purpose of fertility control.”

Burton’s amendment comes as Republicans seek to cut off funding for Title X, the only federal program devoted to family planning among humans.

Let there be no Neigh sayers against this Bill.

Anybody been hearing about all the protesters in Wisconsin? Nice to see people standing up for themselves - Canada is a nation of people who just shake their heads and say "What can you do?". :modding

Yes. I watched the Ed Show on MSNBC last night.

30,000 people were out in the streets in Wisconsin in February. Mr. Ed was there with them.

It turns out that Wisconsin had a predicted budget surplus of $121 million USD. Then the newly elected teabagger Governor gave that money and more to his cronies, creating a budget crisis. To fix this he is now trying to break the Unions for state employees, who make on average 25% less than their corporate counterparts. :c

That's it in a nutshell. Corporate America is back to Union busting.

They're doing that here too. :yes Most of the stuff for the oil sands is now being built overseas instead of in unionized shops here, where my Dad used to work. He's now on month eight without work thanks to the government and big business twits. <_<

Controversy over 'Negro Mountain' reveals urban-rural divide

18th century tribute fuels 21st century debate
February 20, 2011|By Julie Bykowicz, The Baltimore SunGRANTSVILLE — — Bryant Bunch, who came from Prince George's County to attend college here at the far end of the Maryland panhandle, first saw the sign on Interstate 68 while traveling with a carload of friends a few years back.

He remembers their reaction: Does that say what we think it says?

Maxine Broadwater, born and raised on a farm outside Grantsville, and the town's librarian for three decades, recalls the first time she ever gave the name a second thought. It was the early 1990s, and people passing through had stopped at her library to ask about it.

Her thought: Why would that bother anybody?

Those disparate reactions to "Negro Mountain," the name that 18th-century settlers gave to the Garrett County landmark, have found their echo in Annapolis, where a Senate panel will begin debate this week on whether it should be changed.

Several Baltimore lawmakers are pushing to retire "Negro Mountain" as an outdated relic of a less sensitive time. Legislators from Western Maryland, who say the name honors an early African-American hero, want it left alone. A Senate hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

The debate highlights a divide between rural and urban lawmakers that frequently rears up in the 188-member General Assembly.

"How about they take care of Baltimore's crime and drugs, and leave the mountains to us," said Del. Kevin Kelly, an Allegany County Democrat. He says to rename the mountain would be to rewrite history.

Historians believe Negro Mountain, which crosses the border into Pennsylvania, was named in the 1750s in honor of a black frontiersman who died in the French and Indian War while defending white settlers in a fight with Native Americans.

In most accounts, the man's name was "Nemesis," and he was a volunteer soldier fighting with Col. Thomas Cresap.

If the mountain is meant as a tribute, Del. Nathaniel Oaks says, it should bear the man's name, not his race.

"It's the right thing to do," said Oaks, a Baltimore Democrat. "The mountain was named during a time when we were considered property and our names couldn't be put on anything. It's time to put a face to the place."

Sen. Lisa Gladden, who majored in history at Duke University, said her intent is "to update history, not change it." The Baltimore Democrat said she has been "bothered" by the name since she first encountered it on a field trip here for new legislators in 1998.

What does this mean for Montenegro? Should we nuke it?

Here Come the Fries: McDonald's Launches McWeddings in Hong Kong

Imagine receiving a wedding invitation where the typical menu options of salmon, chicken, or beef are replaced with Filet-o-Fish, Chicken McNuggets, or a classic Big Mac.

If McDonald's catered nuptials are your idea of a dream wedding, you might want to consider a trip to Hong Kong, where the international chain has launched its first company licensed McWeddings.

McDonald's Hong Kong first announced its intentions to offer the fast food festivities on October 10 of last year, to coincide with the auspicious 10-10-10, considered an especially lucky date in Chinese numerology. That announcement came with a large group wedding and a fashion show of wedding dresses, which are now available for lease or sale on McDonald's wedding website.

One McWedding to go please . . .

"would you like to upsize that?"

Valve Unveils Steam Guard
VALVE UNVEILS STEAM GUARD

March 3, 2011 -- Valve announced today a new Steam and Steamworks feature called Steam Guard, which gives users greatly increased account security.

Steam Guard allows users to link management of their account to a specific PC. Attempts to modify or change account settings by any other PC won't be possible without the user's approval.

Steam Guard will take advantage of upcoming Intel® Identity Protection Technology (Intel® IPT), an encrypted, hardware-based feature available with the new 2nd Generation Intel® CoreT and Intel® CoreT vProT processors. IPT generates a new numerical password every 30 seconds, integrating into the processor functionality that previously required a separate card or key fob.

Users will also be notified if any PCs other than those authorized by them attempt to log into or modify their account settings.

Steam Guard is available to third parties to incorporate into their own applications through Steamworks.

"Account phishing and hijacking are our #1 support issues," said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. "With Intel's IPT and Steam Guard, we've taken a big step towards giving customers the account security they need as they purchase more and more digital goods."

"We expect to see widespread adoption of hardware-based security like Intel IPT by other service providers," said Doug Lombardi, Valve's Vice President of Marketing. "If as a customer you are buying movies, music, games, or digital goods, you want to know that they are more secure than your physical goods."

"With over 30 million accounts worldwide, Steam is an ideal platform for Intel IPT," said George Thangadurai, General Manager of PC Client Services at Intel. "Those running Steam are investing in a robust digital collection of PC games. By adding hardware-based protection to these investments, we hope to bolster the amazing success of platforms such as Steam."

I smell something fishy... :urgh

seems awfully specific in targeting intel hardware. which any decent PC owner knows is a bad kind of hardware, since it's irreplacable. bet that things will go sour once they stop supporting the older cards in the future. besides, seems like a hassle, as in 'yes, i want to confirm what i just said i wanted to do'.

I'm wondering what happens when you replace your computer, since I bet they'll put up a fight over having to allow a "reset" of this thing every time you get a new machine. This just sounds like another form of stupidly invasive DRM to me.

Fungi that create 'zombie ants' discovered in Brazilian jungle
Four newly discovered species of fungus turn carpenter ants into zombie ants to help them spread their spores

The deepest reaches of the Brazilian jungle harbour some of the most dangerous life on Earth, but the ants in the rainforest face an enemy more sinister than most.

On a recent field trip to the region, scientists discovered four new species of fungus that infect ants, take over their bodies and eventually kill them in a place that is just right for the organism to grow inside them.

The fungus can destroy entire colonies and leave behind gruseome ant graveyards, where twisted, dark corpses rest with their mandibles locked around leaf veins, a final act that secures the creature's host in position before it releases spores to infect others.
