Solved Build 14: New Installer Method for Testing and Feedback

When should we switch to using this new method?

The question is "How many Beta releases?" is going to be there before Full release? If there are going to be 2 or 3 more (for example beta 7) then it is worth it to switch!
But If you're gonna have the Full release of Build 14 after Beta 4 then let's wait. Because you may want to change some files in the base 2.5G file! And people are gonna redownload the big files multiple times! (once for Beta's and once for Full) right?

Probably after the next release there will be 1 more RC release so the last bugs can be found. After that we release it full.
We do want to test this new way so I suggest to use it asap so we can see if it causes problems etc.

That's another aspect of the matter that I didn't think about :) I change my vote to ASAP now

To make things simpler on myself at least, I have moved to the Beta 4 Base for all coming updates:
http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/build-14-beta-4-internal-wip-for-testing.25696/

As far as I can tell, it works just fine. Faster and more reliable than the original process.
If you cannot afford to download the new archive, the new updates are compatible with the last version posted here:
http://www.piratesahoy.net/threads/build-14-beta-3-5-internal-wip-for-testing.24817/

Installation method version 1:
- Download Beta 4 Main Archive and Beta 4 Installer EXE and install directly from that

Installation method version 2:
- First install the last Beta 3.5 WIP version through the usual method
- Install the Beta 4 Installer EXE Update Files on top

Version 2 will not be officially supported for the coming public release, but if people ask for the option, we can give them the details.
I do prefer people to use the new method as it is very simply better. :wp

It seems we haven't figured out the best file extension for the Main Archive yet.
Apparently you don't automatically get the "Save As" option when clicking on the links, so we need one that DOES trigger that behaviour.

So I have now uploaded three identical files with different extensions:
http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/InstallerFilesPotC.cab
http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/InstallerFilesPotC.dat
http://www.piratesahoy.net/build/InstallerFilesPotC.potc

Please click all three and let me know which one automatically gives you the "Save As" screen.
If none of the three do, we may need to continue thinking to find an extension that does always trigger that behaviour.

Definitely the first one its OK.
PS. The file is size 579 kb,is that correct?

Same from my side. If some other people can confirm that too, I'll change the files back to .CAB instead of .DAT .

That is indeed correct. It is just a nearly meaningless place-holder file, so I just took a small ZIP I had lying around.

Only Cab file works for me!
I believe you could also use DMG, TAR, CONF and JAR extensions as well to trigger the save diag.

Opening post updated with CAB-based files instead.
If you already downloaded the Main Archive, you can manually change its extension and it'll work.
Unless anyone runs into any further serious issues with this, I'll keep it like this for the next public release.

When I try to download the CAB file, I get this message: The requested page could not be found.

From the link in the opening post? I just checked and it works fine for me:

Yes it is from the link in the opening post. The installer link work fine, but not the CAB file
link, i get "The requested page could not be found" every time I try.Udklip.PNG

Thats exact the same behavior as the other link, no page found.
In that case I have to wonder if the error is on your side; the file IS there on the same server as the other file. o_O
Perhaps clearing the browser cache would make it behave itself?
