Interview with Orlando Bloom
(from a interview about his new film: Kindom of Heaven)
(May 3rd, 2005)
IGNFF: How is the Pirates coming along so far? I know it's early.
BLOOM: It's awesome. We are [in the Caribbean now]. Yeah, it's great, it's awesome. Gore knows how to… Johnny's amazing. It's the same group of people doing the same crazy s**t. Obviously with the success of the first movie, there is something to live up to, but they're not afraid of that. We're just cracking away at that and it's a great story, a great script.
IGNFF: Are you also shooting parts of the third movie?
BLOOM: We're mostly sticking to the second one right now. There will be a couple of bits just in terms of location stuff that we'll have to do.
IGNFF: What is the trick to acting opposite a larger than life character like Jack Sparrow?
BLOOM: Playing the straight man? It's a challenge. Johnny's an amazingly gracious actor. He's been one of my guides in terms of one of the guys that's inspired me as a young actor. In terms of playing the straight guy is a challenge. When everyone around you is doing all this incredible pirate acting and you're having to sort of play the straight guy and move the story forward, you kind of want to be doing some of that pirate ripping it up stuff, but in truth, to be a part of that project is what I love. I think it's great family entertainment and yet it's smart and witty, intelligent entertainment too. I'm still in the first chapter of my career, I like to think, and hopefully I'll have a long career and opportunity to do the Jack Sparrow-type characters when I'm like 40-something. Right now I'm still flexing old wings… I'm very conscious of how fortunate I've been, but I'm also aware that I've got a lot to learn… If I did it all right away… What would be left to do?
Interview with Johnny Depp
(from a interview about the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)
(July 13th, 2005)
IGNFF: So with the curse of the pirate films before Caribbean's success, is there a sense of pressure on set?
BLOOM: They've maintained the same atmosphere as before. Gore [Verbinski] knows how to make a good movie and the writers and Jerry know how to make a good movie and they're trying to maintain that looseness that we had the first time around that enabled us to make this wild movie… Now there's some expectations, but nevertheless, we're still going at it like hammer and tong.
Q: How are things going with Pirates of the Caribbean 2?
DEPP: We've been shooting Pirates 2 for a few months now. We had a hiatus that was planned. It was supposed to start tomorrow, but we went into hiatus a bit early because of bits that we were going to shoot up in Grand Bahama; sets and stuff that weren't ready. But more than that, one of our actors, one of our main guys, Kevin McNally who plays Gibs, ended up with a really nasty ear infection in both ears. He was in England and unable to get on a plane. So we just weighed all of the options and said we'll break now, go on hiatus, and when we start up again we'll finish the bit through to 2.
Q: Any truth to the rumor you're trying to get Keith Richards to play your father in the movie?
DEPP: Yes.
Q: Will he?
DEPP: I don't know exactly. It looks like it's going to happen but I don't know when. It's all going to depend on where we are and where he is. Because, you know, he's got a little thing called the Rolling Stones tour.
[Editor's note: Depp confirmed Keith Richards' casting a couple days ago at the LA. premiere of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.]
Q: What did you think of their decision to add some flashbacks to Wonka's childhood to add depth to the character?
DEPP: The first thing I thought was that it was very brave of [screenwriter] John August and Tim to make that decision and to go in that direction. And to keep it in the spirit of Roald Dahl's intent was no small undertaking. In terms of cinema it's a great tool. It's a beautiful luxury for an actor because it explains of the back-story, a lot of where Wonka comes from. But for an audience it gives you a bit more insight to what this guy is and how he's become what he's become. So, yeah, I was really pleased about the back-story.

Yun-Fat set for swashbuckling sequel.
by Brian Linder
July 7, 2005 - Chow Yun-Fat has been confirmed for Pirates of the Caribbean 3, according to today's Variety.
Chow will reportedly play Captain Sao Feng, a notorious pirate who plays a major role in the second Pirates sequel. Fans that have been tracking the project with us will remember that the Hong Kong native was originally rumored to be playing infamous 15th century Chinese pirate Cheung Po Tsai back in 2004. There's obviously been a role revision since then.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and the still-untitled third installment in the swashbuckling franchise are being filmed semi-concurrently.
Not much is known about the third film in the series, but Chest tells what happens as Captain Jack Sparrow tries to figure out how to pay back a blood debt he owes to the legendary Davey Jones, ruler of the ocean depths and captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman. If he's unable to pay, he'll be cursed to eternal damnation. As you might expect, Captain Jack's problems complicate the wedding plans of the blissful Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, who quickly find themselves thrust back into Jack's misadventures.
Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will be joined by Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill and Naomie Harris as a gypsy queen
The first sequel will sail into theaters in Summer 2006 with the third film in the series opening in Summer '07.
The production is currently on break and will resume mid-August in Los Angeles before moving back to various tropical locales in the Caribbean.

While speaking to the BBC, Orlando Bloom revealed that he'll fight a nasty giant squid, or Kraken, in the sequel. Also, Keira Knightley will have a battle in which she wields two swords. Nice. (Comingsoon.net)
