WIP Centurion

Here's how I did the naming, not sure how much of it came through the OBJ export

Copied and pasted from my instructions to FLS on their importing:
  • DECO = Custom texture, not colorized
  • GRATING = Custom grating texture previously used in the Lyon hoy, not colorized
  • Primary_MAIN = Primary colorization using WOOD-MAIN.TGA
  • Trim_GRAIN = Trim colorization using WOOD-GRAIN.TGA
  • Trim_MAIN = Trim colorization using WOOD-MAIN.TGA
  • Interior_MAIN = Interior colorization using WOOD-MAIN.TGA
  • Interior_GRAIN = Interior colorization using WOOD-GRAIN.TGA
  • Under_GRAIN = Underwater colorization using WOOD-GRAIN.TGA
  • Under_MAIN = Underwater colorization using WOOD-MAIN.TGA
Masts and rigging are named similarly.

Been experimenting with textures for this ship, here are some pics

They all look absolutely magnificent. Do you think it would take too long to do one like Geoff Hunt's painting? I Think I've seen smaller vessels in game painted like that.

golden.jpg
(It's a bit bluer in person. Over the blue is some gold leaf.)

I think the blue may be anachronistic. I've never seen it on a British ship older than 1760. Prior to that it wold have been a dark bluish green or black according to contemporary paintings and models. I'll post some reference images next time I'm on my computer.

For bonus accuracy points, the upper wale and anchor buffer thingy would have been the same color as the hull. I only colorized them for POTBS because they insist on putting the wales in trim.

Oh, and gunport sills and interior hull should be red ochre for all nations in this period.

Sorry for the multiposting, the mobile version of the site doesn't give me an edit button. These two images give the best view of Centurion's color scheme in-period (though the black may have been to simplify the model rather than the actual color of the paint on the real ship)

Another possibility would be the color scheme on the contemporary Rippon 1735 (See attached). It might have been a slightly brighter turquoise when new (it appears to be a copper based paint?) but not the royal blue you have in the renders.

For a late period color scheme take a look at Centurion 1774:
http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66494.html

The Spanish variant would have yellow paint on the hull between the wales, I believe.

Also, all versions prior to about 1760 would have white under the waterline. Centurion 1732 was never plated.

Thanks for all the great work you've done so far! :onya

Post Captain- that is what I am going for with the historical HMS Centurion scheme, and I tried to get as close as I could with what I have to that painting. (compare this picc with the painting http://www.flickr.com/photos/64339105@N08/6887827196/in/photostream)

Kriswood-Alright, I really like that blue but it is your ship :doff I wonder if there is anything in the POTBS textures that is close to the blue in the Geoff hunt painting? how does this look for the centurion herself? http://www.flickr.com/photos/64339105@N08/6915454434/in/photostream

Stunning! Can you make the vertical stripes on the stern gallery the interior coloring? :onya

You can put the anchor buffers back in trim if you like, they do look better dark when the upper wale is dark, I think.

Alright, will do :onya I just tried making the window parts red, but I think looks a bit odd, whatt do you think?

You got the colors backward, look here: http://forum.piratesahoy.net/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=8329

all the red in the pic I posted is one object now, so Ill have to split it back up again, Ill try to get it to look as it does in the pic

There is a problem with one, though, it seems like a ladder was placed overlapping with a gunport

Looking good! I suspect your main deck guns are too big. :) The real life armament was 24 @ 24pdr on the gun deck, 26 @ 9pdr on the main deck, and 10 @ 6pdr. Also in case you're curious while on the topic of stats, she had a crew of 400 men (I think it was 350 in peacetime) and carried 1005 tons of cargo space.

Ah, ok, ill scale down the upper deck ones then :onya Wow 9 pdrs? I wouldve expected at least 12 pdrs for that deck, but I guess the Centurion was actually fairly small for a ship of the line. At 144 ft on deck she is about the length of an average 32 or 36 gun frigate of the 1790s or early 1800s, though certainly wider to carry more weight. I'll set the max Crew at 400 when I get to that stage ;)
