Released Neptunus Privateer

Been quite busy lately but here are some WIP renders of the Indiaman's figurehead:

An alternate colour scheme:

And some renders of the forecastle which has had some remodelling:

The figurehead depicts the Roman Goddess Fortuna blindfolded, holding a Horn of Plenty (Cornucopia) on her right arm and the Wheel of Fortune (Rota Fortunae) in her left hand.

The figurehead was made by importing a character from makehuman into max, I then rigged the figure to a biped and then created the clothes with garment maker and after a lot of trial and error I got what you see above. The clothing of the figurehead Fortuna was based on a statue of her but the statue has a lot of creases and details which I couldn't recreate as it would make the polygon count very high. Once I got the clothing manipulated into position I used the multires modifier to reduce the polygons drastically. She still needs work and I may redo the clothing as this was a trial to see how she looked on the bow. Phil has asked me to try and make a figurehead of Mercury as he wants to call the ship Mercury for PotBS.

The Neptunus is currently in review for PotBS and the model has been improved in some areas. I am creating some textures for when I convert her into the Storm Engine, here I have used Bava's planking texture to make a texture for the hull:

I done this texturing before I altered the model so I will have to redo this on the final version after it gets past review. :)

Regards,

Been quite busy lately but I have added a small forecastle to the Neptunus and other details, I am working on the texturing still for when I attempt to convert her and I am also working on a Mercury figure for the Indiaman, anyway here are some renders:

Gathering my jaw from my floor, I figured there is not much to say. I am not sure what those ropes on the deck is for, but I love every detail, every spar.
She will be the sovereign of all ingame ships for sure!

Thanks for the comments :)

The rope on deck is the anchor cable which runs into the hold for stowage, they are laid out on deck to represent a ship with anchors ready to drop. Usually when in such a situation the anchor cables are coiled loosely on the deck but I didn't want the cables to interfere with the operation of the cannons so I simplified the detail to a loose lying cable running out the hawse holes.

Regards,

Looking good! There would be a small leather or sailcloth cover around where the rudderhead comes up through the deck, similar to the one where it goes through the counter. Also I'm uncertain how the mainstay would connect to the stempost but that doesn't look correct.

Great work overall! :onya

I have made a collar for the rudderhead which would be removable to allow the rudder to be unshipped but I will probably see what a canvas cover would look like instead though. As for the mainstay the draught of the original ship shows a hole like the gammoning hole on the stem in the same location as I have run the main stay. The original also aided me in positioning the inboard kevels and small knights as the plan shows what I assume to be sheaves on the hull and ring bolts for the running rigging.

Ah ok that looks good! I wonder why it was such a wide hole. Perhaps there were multiple ropes through it, as through a heart? Dutch ships did something similar with their mainstays for small ships in this time period, with a deadeye at the upper end of the lanyards and the lower ends of the lanyards rove through the stempost, albeit with a separate hole per lanyard and not with a single hole like this.

I've got the files from SeaNorris and now start to work on conversion of Neptunus for COAS.

An update:
-Converted and exported the model to .gm format.
-Received new gun model from SeaNorris, made roping for it and installed on a ship.
-Made a path file and now working on locators.

According to the agreement with SeaNorris, I'll make a release of a model without cab interior and with non-transparent windows. And then make another one with the interior. Both will be available for download.

Seconded :onya Simply a stunning ship, with a breathtaking level of detail! The gingerbread work on the stern, the stays, the ropes on the masts and deck, the head area (especially) are all higher detail than most new ships, I think they add alot! Will she be available in both POTC and COAS? or just one? Either way, excellent work by all involved. :doff

Guns and lights work ok. Now I'm working on rigging and sailors walking file.

Does anybody know where the "beep" bug come from? It is present with a Neptunus too :( I've spent almost three hours trying to find the reason, but nothing. I don't even know what this "beep" tells. Is a locator mistake or incorrect export to .gm format? Everything except this is fine.

Incorrect export, is what I always understood of things. Generally means that some required collision information or something isn't there.

Collision? Do the COAS models have separated collision models, different from the visible objects? Maybe you can give me some recommendations on how to export the models to prevent the beeping bug?

BTW, rigging ow the bowsprit and front mast is ready.

Do I need to check the Build BSP (draft or product) flag for ships hull, masts etc, when exporting objects to .gm format in Maya?

Ah, yes you need to check Build BSP and Product for all models. Problems will arise if you ignore those points.
Also, I'd highly recommend using the Blinn material, which tends to give the most reliable results when editing the ship in TOOL for other purposes.

Notice the flagpole on this ship too, which you'll need to separate like with the Lyon Hoy, otherwise there will be camera issues.
