Has anybody tried Akella's Pirates of the Caribbean on Windows 10 yet? If so, does it work? I might give Windows 10 a try tomorrow, and if I do, I'll let you guys know how/if it runs.

Moderator's Note: If the game runs slowly on Windows 10, you may need to use a framerate limiter. Below are some examples known to work for PotC:

I tried it out yesterday, and it works as expected on Windows 10 (with the Build Mod installed). :onya

Note that, for anyone buying a new laptop (or upgrading an existing one) with Intel graphics, you will need to install the Build Mod with the 'Intel Fix' selected for the game to work properly, as has always been the case.

Yes, done. Now, I have a Core i5 4460 with the HD 4600, I must use the 'Intel fix'. Well, until I buy a real graphic card next year or in 2017 (I'm waiting for Elder Scrolls 6 :cheeky)

I got my new laptop with windows 8.1 but I might install windows 10 any day when I find out how...

However is there any type of video codec or some software I need to install on a new computer to run GOF and POTC games?

Usually I send laptop to workshop to install my programs for me.. but this time I figured Id do it myself .. so if someone can help me get started and advice me on which codecs I should download to avoid any texture issues in the future, I would appreciate your input :cheeky

:shrug Nobody knows. Or at least I don't know of anyone who has installed winx around here yet. Elsewhere they are saying that modern games are running better than before, but some people are reporting problems watching dvds and movies, some motherboards are crashing.

I need to install a bios update to my motherboard before trying to install winx.

    Solution:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

    Original Opening Post:

I recently upgraded from win8.1 to winX and mostly really like the new system. It is optimized much better for gaming and all games I have tried have seen a performance boost.

But how does it work out for POTC?

Not so well. It seems to lock the game in windowed mode. For most that is not an issue and in fact many prefer it. My system does not play nice with windowed mode and I am having problems.

While there is an overall performance increase and sailing works better because of it, on land things are a little different. Specifically anything happening indoors.
Indoors all functions happen at a super slow pace. It takes forever to turn around to leave a room. Menus scroll slowly and jerkily. Dealing with all stores and shipyards, and spending the night in a room are major pains.

Oddly enough, dealing with street merchants is fine. Everything works at the normal speed with them for some reason. And running in the jungle is fine. It is a little odd to see 200,300,400 and more frames per second but everything looks and works fine.

So, if POTC works ok for you in windowed mode do not be afraid of winX. As for me, COAS runs better than ever.

Tried PotC on Windows 10 today for a short bit too.
The stock game was EXTREMELY slow in the Inventory screen.
It got much better with the mod in windowed mode. But indeed control response indoors was not as fast as it should be.

Still strange though. Could it be related to hardware or is it a Windows 10 thing?
I fear it is something of an engine thing, which means there is little to be done about it.

That slowness indoors is something that has always been there and only got very rarely activated. It only happened to me maybe two times before, but now it seems to be an every time thing so I say for now that it is something that WinX unlocked in its optimizations somewhere.

My computer not liking windowed mode is a hardware thing as it has always had trouble with it.

I just ran a quick test in my install again, and I haven't noticed any slowdown indoors or using the inventory screen with Windows 10. :shrug
I'm still running it on Intel hardware with the graphics fix, though since that only affects the water, I can't see it affecting indoor performance.
My test was also in the early stages of the game, so I didn't have much in my inventory to slow that down either.

This was with Beta 3.4 (still holding out for Beta 4 :cheeky ) in windowed mode.

Has anyone tried using the built-in Game DVR features, yet? It seems like a convenient way of recording gameplay or taking screenshots, though I'm not sure if it's compulsory to use the Xbox app to view your saved clips and images. They ought to be saved to a separate folder, anyway.

I just tried playing POTC 3.3 in windowed mode and it got worse with slowdowns in the open too. Put it back to full screen and it was ok outdoors.

What DVR feature? I can take screenies and movies already.

The extremely slow Inventory screen in the Unmodded game was during the tutorial, so it certainly wasn't bad because there were a lot of items. :no

It's a new feature that lets you take screenshots and record videos during a game without needing any third-party software. You can access the menu by pressing Win key + G while in-game, or you can use keyboard shortcuts for screenshots and recording.

Obviously, if you still use something like Fraps for all that, you can ignore this feature.

@Hylie Pistof you know for sure there is no throtteling or something like that happening? (aka, is your CPU/GPU working on max capcity in these cases or are they turned down).
Are you using ENB or not?
Windows X uses the new DirectX so there might be some compatability problems. You did install directX when installing potc right?
Maybe try ENB, if you don't like the bloominess we can fix that. But it will make potc use a higher verison of directX so it might solve some problems...

    Or try this please:

(uninstall enb if you have it)
    Install this:
    https://www.williamfeely.info/wiki/DXGL#Downloads

Open the config and add POTC as an application. You can set up some setting but don't need it (yet). Now run the game and see if it makes a difference.
This should wrap it to OpenGL2.0 instead of Dx8. And as far as I know most videocards nowadays handle opengl a lot better.

Oh, the DVR thingy is a winX app? I will stick with Fraps as it seems to be easier to use.

Here are some load charts I took while running POTC versions 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5. Please understand that on land I am seeing over 400 fps and at sea it is usually in the mid 50s and some times goes over 60 fps. The 4th one is on land.
    POTC 3.3 loads 2-17-2015.jpg POTC 3.4 loads 2-17-2015.jpg POTC 3.5 3 med ships 6-28-2015.jpg potc 3.5 loads land.jpg POTC beta 3.5 loads 3-24-2015.jpg

No ENB. ENB sucks the big weinie. What I have seen in ENB is a big drop in performance besides it being very ugly.

I have had DX9 installed for years. Since I am seeing an overall improvement in performance I have not reinstalled DX9 on winX.

I will try that OGL thingy ASAP! I have been looking for DX9 wrappers that work with POTC with no luck.

I installed that OGL thingy and POTC CAB looks slightly smoother with less jaggies. Frame rates are still very high and I am concerned about my hardware running at that level. The fans got loud. The slow motion bug is present outdoors in the daytime too now and gets worse indoors. It can take 8 full swipes of the mouse across the mouse pad to turn around and the character looks like he is swimming underwater. At sea the action is overall smoother and less jerky, but that timed pause is still present. That is a program feature, not a graphics feature.

I then reinstalled DX9 and ran POTC3.3. Frame rates are a little higher but that is all I noticed. As they are waaaay to high already that is not necessarily a good thing. There was no slow down outdoors but the indoors slowdown is still bad. That is a global thing as everything is slower indoors.
The main feature of POTC, the sailing, is still pretty good in POTC3.3 with that timed pause not being visible.

Here are loads in POTC CAB with OGL. Frame rates at sea are in the 57-63fps range.

There seems to be some kind of testing utility in it to see if you need the fix. maybe try that first. I haven't had time to do a wx install so I can't check
