WIP KrisWood's Lyon Hoy small trader, 8 guns

The Lyon Hoy is in POTC again. Bought her in a shipyard and went sailing. I got Lyon 2 first but I'm sure 1 and 3 are ok.

The gaff still has the reverse lighting bug and I guess POTC crew are smaller than COAS crew because I was a giant. I lowered the camera until I was about the same size as the crew.

And the cabin has a globe in it! :hmm

Awww she's so cute! Which game is that last screenshot from, I'll have to get hold of a copy of it!

It's the game we've been modding at PiratesAhoy! ever since it came out in 2003 - the original Pirates of the Caribbean. :cheeky
Unlike the other PotC games, this one is actually the precursor of Age of Pirates and Age of Pirates 2 and has virtually the same file structure and uses the same file types.
In fact, all three games are virtually the same game with only some small changes made in the game engine between versions.

Which of them is best if I just want to take pretty screenshots and don't care about the gameplay? ;)

CoAS is the newer game with the prettier sea graphics, though personally I prefer PotC by far. Either game is fine, depends on which one you can find.
PotC is getting hard to find, but CoAS is available as digital download. We can help you find PotC if you want though.

And I think a promotion is in order; welcome to the Modders group, KrisWood! :doff

I have them both and now prefer the look of the water and the way the ships move in POTC. COAS used to be better until a few months ago. COAS is newer and has sharper graphics, but something just strikes me as wrong about its water.

Do you need a gaff-yard with flipped normals for PotC? It works OK in COAS , because the XX parameter of the yard set to '-1' reverses lightning as it should be and makes the gaff-sail work correct with the wind.

In POTC setting the xx to -1 gives it the reverse lighting bug unless the gaff is flipped. With ships with spankers we have been creating 2 spankers. One invisible that uses the xx of -1 and one visible one that attaches to the invisible one. This is because we don't know how to flip normals.

If you haven't already flipped the normals, that would be a good idea, yes. It's always nice to avoid reverse lighting. :onya

We do know how to flip the normals; the workaround we're currently using just saves having to re-export every single spanker through Maya to do so.

Thanks guys! It is great to be among the modders now! Hope I'll have enough free time in future to make a few nice models and conversions here!

And about the gaff-yard, I've found the bug. I think I've forgotten to uncheck the "double sided" flag in Maya before export. It is fixed already, so I'll upload it on ftp this evening.

I've got her in my game now and she's an absolute beauty! It's brilliant also for variety's sake to have a new high-detail small ship, rather than the large new ship models that people generally make.
Though I must say, ever since ship modeling picked up here, the modelers have been doing an amazing job at getting a large variety of ships in the game,
rather than just film ships and large British royal navy ships which is what most modelers made when we had just figured out ship modeling.

I especially like the main sail being attached to a rope on the side of the ship instead of to a boom as most ships have.
This makes her look a fair bit different from similar ships and seems to work very nicely indeed. :onya

The only comment I might have is that apparently I can't walk in 1st person mode onto the bow.
But then since she doesn't have bow chasers that might need to be aimed, that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

In any case, thanks very much for this wonderful model; I'm really happy to be able to include her in our modpack! :woot

Agreed. Having been at sea for quite some time myself, I also think that the water in CoAS looks fancy, but not quite right.
The PotC sea doesn't look quite realistic either, of course, but I do think the somewhat stylized look in the PotC game world is very easy on the eyes. At least on MY eyes. :wp
