WIP Remus77 Christianus/Trinity

I can't believe that NO one commented on the archaic "SLUTTISH" reference issued by the Admiralty above in my post. MK

I do not have that ship in GOF2, so can not do any more work to her. Could you post a ships_init file for COAS?

I agree!

The whole paint argument WAS getting out of hand.:yes

I'm just glad the ship is almost completely done. Let's just focus on that.
Hylie do I just need to swap the masts on my PotC paint variants or do I need to redo my hulls too?:checklist

Why are we even arguing over paint? Retexturing = easy. ;)

Couldn't have said it better myself mate.:onya

Enjoyment is more important than who has the most accurate paint job anyway as far as I'm concerned.

As a former PotBS player I actually find personalized paint jobs more interesting than historical jobs anyway.
I submitted a complete recreation of the Trinity which I sailed on PotBS before things went bonkers over there for all of you to enjoy.

Anyhow the Trinity is a wonderful model. and the textures are easy as pie for anyone to re-texture to their heart's content (even for noobs like me). Armada did a hell of a good job making this ship available for us and should be commended for all his hard work.:doff

Noriru: I added some locators to the hull. Other than that they should be the same.

What would be a good existing ships_init .c file to use in GOF2 for this ship? I am not familiar with the COAS code.

I just got back from a trip and am going strictly from memory.

:facepalm The Paint argument wasn't the problem, it was the political argument. It STARTED out as a discussion about textures that turned into a historical paint argument. Jan and I have actually had this argument before in other places. I would actually love to continue the dialogue and really push the research. Its too bad there isn't actually a site dedicated to the pursuit of Age of Sail authenticity/research out there where we could have such discussions - so we wouldn't clutter up the more elevated & pure kiddie game content posts.
Wrong type of discussion to have on a kiddie gaming site I suppose. :shrug Like I said in the previous paint post, I know I waste my time spewing such facts anyway because no one really cares, so no worries Mates - wont happen again. My posts of late have been much less parochial or lengthy. I see myself as an occasional lurker in the very near future.

AMAZINGLY!!!! :whipa There IS actually this Teeny weenie tiny-est miniscule little iddy-biddy (almost invisible really) fraction of people on PA that actually ENJOY historical authenticity. God forbid we have to actually pick up a book and do some meaningful research or reading now and then. I'm not knocking anyone's hobby or preferences, so don't knock mine, ---- but it sure seems like as long as I have my red-sailed super ship that does 20 knots, moves like a hydrofoil and shoots greek-fire everything is hunky dory in pirate gameland.
I'm OK, You're OK, we're all OK - Fun for Everyone! Yeah! :boom:

whoa, you ok there MK? I personally love historical accuracy, and I have a few shelves of books on nautical/naval/pirate subjects back home that i often refer to for research. I find out everyhting I can about a certain ship before i build one; history, dimensions, sailing qualities, various armaments etc. Realism makes the game more fun, kind of like reliving the past, while arcadiness is boring. I'm no history major, and I know our time periods of interest probably don't overlap, but debating little historical details make for a more accurate game, and a more immersive experience. there will probably always be people around here that aren't bothered about realism, but there will also be people like us who believe that it is essential.

I've got no objection to it being discussed, but if you want to do that, why not start a new thread about it in The Burning Brig or something?
We could even make a new subforum dedicated to research and historical accuracy, if more people think it's worth it. After all, there IS a place for ALL Age of Sail stuff at PiratesAhoy!
As long as we can keep the discussions civilized, we should be fine. I don't think it's worth getting worked up over paint jobs. But politics can better not be discussed at all, of course.

Personally I wouldn't recognize all the historical accuracy that you all put effort into because I'm not an expert, but I definitely do like it.
If we are going to do something, we might as well do it correctly, right? And it will definitely add to the atmosphere in any case and maybe we will learn something from it as well?
After all, I didn't get started on that Periods mod in PotC for nothing; there definitely IS a place for that stuff! :onya

This is all getting very, very immature. This definitely isn't a kiddie gaming site, and I would say that the majority of active, influential members care about historical accuracy. We have, after all, determined that HOOCOTS will be as historically accurate as possible.

Just because one or two of us were growing tired of a very long, heated, and at times uncivil argument over paint that needed its own thread, it doesn't mean that we're out to get you. Sure, there are those people who are obstinately attached to high fantasy, whose views I respectfully disagree with, and they will probably never change. As far as frequently active, important members are concerned, they are a minority. I honestly see that post as an insult to all the other community members who have worked over the years to make PoTC and CoAS more historically accurate.

Am I overreacting? Maybe. Were you overreacting? Definitely.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
All I have to add is this: our beliefs are generally reflected in our work, so if the majority of us didn't believe in historical accuracy over fantasy, then both the Build Mod and GoF would be totally different.

:cool Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I disagree with yours. I have attempted to start dozens of historical discussions over the years, thinking somehow that you two might be correct in your assumptions. A handful started dialogue - though usually short-lived. It was mostly a waste of time with the exception that usually this old dog learns something new. :read

As for our games they are still fraught full of historical problems/inconsistency/inaccuracies - Why do you think I started building Eras? Maybe HAIRCUTS will turn out OK. :cheeky

As for my own venture, on 01 December, I will find out if I have enough financial backing to go forward. If so, it will be the most historically authentic offering anyone has ever seen - whether anyone cares or not. :pirate41:

Well I'M not meaning to make trouble here. I just submitted a couple of paint jobs for use that's all. I actually DO like historical accuracy too. I myself like a nice balance of historical authenticity (especially the ships) with a touch of personal creativity.

I just wanted to try to contribute something to PA here, but if my any of my stuff is offending anyone than I'll refrain from submitting things.

@Pieter: I think a thread devoted to discussion of historical topics is an excellent idea.

A thread could get messy quick; I vote for a new subforum dedicated to historic research and discussion. Maybe it'll take off, maybe it won't, but at least we'll have tried. :doff
Armada, would you mind setting that up? I'm trying to do as little as possible while I'm still on vacation in Florida. ;)

Out of curiosity, what do you think of the historical accuracy of the PotC Build Mod these days?
Ignoring the obvious PotC film and fantasy stuff that technically is included but not pushed right into anyone's face.
We've had the Periods mod in there for quite a while now, which has a LOT of impact on a LOT of various things,
trying to get the actual timeframes if not completely accurate, but at least much more so than we had before.
I mean... we HAVE been trying and I would actually like to know to what extent we have succeeded so far. :doff

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I disagree with yours.

Please explain. I certainly agree that historical accuracy is a top priority, and I'm not at all opposed to debates on the subject. I do think that discussions reaching the scale of the paint discussion belong in their own threads.

I have attempted to start dozens of historical discussions over the years, thinking somehow that you two might be correct in your assumptions. A handful started dialogue - though usually short-lived. It was mostly a waste of time with the exception that usually this old dog learns something new.

Maybe we assumed you were correct? My area of expertise is sailing and rigging, and in the Napoleonic era in general. Your claims are obviously well-researched, and are outside my area of extensive knowledge, so why contradict them? All I have to help me before the mid 1700's are random facts and practical experience. I'd love to discuss some topics, but they just haven't had the occasion to be brought up yet. A dedicated forum for that purpose would be nice, and I would certainly participate in it.

We've certainly done a good job compared to the stock Alkella games. However, there wasn't necessarily time to fix everything that was wrong. With HOOCOTS, we'll be starting from scratch, and we'll be doing everything we can to get it right. Not only will we be focusing on period correct clothing and weapons, we also hope to include ships that accurately represent every type and state of seagoing vessel for each era, from brand new state-of-the-art frigates, to decrepit old merchantmen. I even have some ideas that would facilitate making the rigging of later vessels accurate to within five or so years to the game date. We'll have customizable paint that only comes in historically accurate colors, and there's been talk of customizable accurate figureheads.

Similarly, I'll use my understanding of seamanship to make sure the sailing aspect of the game is completely accurate, since that is as much a part of history as the seagoing vessels themselves. I may only have experience crewing on vessels that would have been built after 1770, but the principles of square-rig seamanship remain the same throughout history. For specifics, I have ample resources that deal with the sailing and working of vessels as far back as 1600. These era-specific details range from repairing broken rudders to riding out severe weather. In the end, my goal at least, will be to have produced the world's only truly historic sailing simulator, in addition to creating an accurate role playing game.

I may have gotten carried away there, but the idea remains the same: There is no doubt in my mind that HOOCOTS will be more than "OK," and I will not rest until I see that conviction fulfilled.

Actually, I will rest. That last clause just sounded too elegant to delete. I'm ready for bed.
