    I do not believe any of the quests have skills checks when you get them. This can be really annoying, as quests like the Bluebird can be gotten relatively quickly, but you are in no position to win the battle... Some ideas that have worked for me... -Officers (fighters) help out in boarding...

    More canon problems?

    Problem found! The issue, is that I downloaded The Couleus Voiles mod, which allow you to change sail colour, insignia, etc as per the original AOP. For some reason, it also disables the ability to tell your companions to reload/recharge, so they only use one ammo.

    I turned tactical battles on to give it a try, see how things are... By and large, I don't mind it. Lot sof canon fire, very long encounters to whittle the enemy down enough to board them, and it's nearly impossible to sink a ship with canons... which is the problem I had four ships blasting...

    BUG For some reason, the game crashes everytime I tell a companion ship to change to a different canon ammunition. Not an instant crash... sorta once they finish reloading and fire the game freaks out (graphics go weird, before it freezes and crashed). Ideas?

    This quest isn't that bad. Turn all the foliage off, as you did. You're looking for something very, very tiny. As a general rule, only bother doing the quest if its a ruby. They stand out quite well against the ground with the foliage off so you can actually see them from a little bit away...

    I know that officer loyalty was (finally and thankfullly) fixed so that neutral reputation officers would no longer have their loyalty steadily tank. My understanding is that neutral reputation officers now gain and loose loyalty based on the reputation of the majority of your other officers...
